MACE is a one page RPG in the classical (old school) style. The default rules seem to indicate a Fantasy Setting, but Skills are included that represent Sci-Fi or other genre possibilities. Skills are customizable, so the possibilities are as unlimited as the players’ imaginations. Materials needed for play are 6d6 (max) per player. Poker chips or other Tokens may be desired to represent Fate but are not mandatory. The sheet is designed so that every player has access to the rules along with their character sheet. Game is not play-tested and takes some previous experience with role-playing to interpret. Enjoy and comment with questions and concerns. If you do play MACE, let me know how it went.

Have you ever fancied yourself as a space-faring adventurer, exploring the vast regions of an alien-filled galaxy? Or what about a master sleuth in Victorian England? Perhaps you want to live out the exploits of a thief in a fantasy realm? With the USR system you can do all this and more. Using the simple rules in this booklet, you will soon be creating exciting stories with your friends while munching on high-carb snacks.

USR is an easy game to learn but there are optional rules throughout if you fancy making it a bit more advanced. Feel free to add your own rules or change current ones to match your preferences. The most important thing is that you and your group have fun with it.

In the future I will be releasing a number of role-playing games based on the USR system, from pulp action to time-travelling sci-fi, so stay tuned!

I really hope you enjoy this system and have a lot of fun with it. It’s always been a dream of mine to get a role-playing system published and put out there for everyone to play.

Originally made for NaGa DeMon. This is dark stories, my first role-playing game I made and brought out to download for free. It’s a modern-day diceless role play where the characters have encountered something of unnatural origins, these encounters give the characters quest and the players motivation to go on with the search to the unknown.

There is a system in the game that allows the players to use dices and a few demons and spells for game masters to use. there are also a character sheet with explanation for first time players.

The cause of the game is that the players use their knowledge and contacts to find clues to the current problem, this could include a horrible monster or some thing supernatural that has happened or is happening.

This role-play can be used for a single session or a campaign of multiple sessions.

This is the first role-play I made and want to know what’s good an what can better, it’s a trail and if you think some parts can be better please notify me. If the results are good ill bring out a supplement and if there are bad ill try to make the game better, if you have some criticism on the document be specific about it.
Have fun.

Nights of the Crusades is a roleplaying game set in a land and time that is familiar on the surface, but within its cracks lie tales of sorcery, madness and violence. It is a world that could have happened and then been lost to barbarity and time. Players take on characters that can explore the places involved in the Crusades, from Egypt, through to Damascus and Jerusalem. The Tale-Weaver is their guide, allowing them to unearth the horrors of war and fanaticism as they pursue their goals. As the main characters come across storytellers in their travels, they will take part in a new story within the story of their main narrative. Magic, djinn and foul beasts lurk within the minds of the storytellers, yet many secrets and shards of knowledge can be found within these tales.

And the real world is not free from horror. The land is rife with dark cults, creatures that dwell in unseen places and bloodthirsty warriors. This is a time when anyone’s thoughts, from king to slave, are enough to condemn them to death and hell, and many are they that will line up to cheer the execution. Nights of the Crusades is a mixture of the Arabian Nights, the history surrounding the Crusades and both modern and ancient tales of terror.

The rules hope to reflect mature and gritty issues that are not catered to in many popular RPGs, such as the psychological impacts of combat and killing. The gameplay also allows for tension in every form of conflict, whether verbal or physical. A group of companions made up of an artist, diplomat and physician will be as enjoyable to play as one made up of a warrior, archer and thief.

“Two people, trapped in a tiny sub, alone in the dark waters at the bottom of the sea. Will they be rescued before they succumb to the elements…or each other.”

The entirety of this game is presented as a single image, sized to print on an 11 by 17 piece of paper. There is a reason for that…

This was a combination of two different “thought threads” on the story-games.com forums. The first goal was creating a game where the story takes place in a single confined space, and the second was to try and create an entire game not as a rulebook, but as a poster.

Because of the poster restriction, it assumes a lot from the players, in that they are generally familiar with narrative-styled games and board game conventions. For example, it doesn’t explicitly state that you should shuffle a deck of cards at the start of the game.

Additionally, the rules are not “ordered” as one would find in a rulebook. Instead, they are linked to various graphic game elements, so you’ll definitely need to read the entire thing and puzzle the rules together.

Anyway, I am hesitant to add any rules outside of the poster; the whole point was that you needed nothing else but the graphic. And I am more than fine with players ‘making up what they need’ outside of what is presented.

In the world of Disparity 2% of the people hold 99% of the wealth most people scrape by with what they can grow, or make.

Others however, have learned to make a living by selling their unique skills to the rich, in order to fuel their petty spats and lust for power. These men and women are known as the Nujahara, though others may call you thief, conman, rogue or even pirate.

By searching out both useful bits of information and arcane items of power from other noble houses, ancient tombs, mazes, and vaults you will earn your wages and live a life much nicer life than your dirt farming contemporaries. Rumors say that those items have the ability to bend reality to the users will.

While there is no formal organization for the Nujahara you probably will not find it hard to find others of your kind, if you pay attention the world around you.

The game is set on Titania, a huge colony ship drifting through deep space towards… somewhere. A central biosphere generates food, oxygen and recycles water for hundreds of habitation pods floating at the end of trailing umbilical connections. Each habitation pod is ruled by a family, lords of their domain. Lords of Titania is the story of the downfall of one such family.

You will play the flawed rulers of a habitation pod; a family enclosed by Nature and divided by their own natures. Each of you will control a particular component of the pod and you will use that control to gain power over your family members. This will not go smoothly. There will be oath-breaking, betrayal and murder, and an exile will return to seek vengeance. But if you survive… How sweet will your victory be then.

Getting our Game Chef 2011 submission, Forsooth!, in under the wire.

Forsooth! is a game inspired by Shakespeare, wherein players control multiple characters with disparate motivations to, together, improvise a tale of Shakespearean scope. Unlike traditional RPGs, Forsooth! uses no game master or storyteller. One man in his time plays many parts, so we are all storytellers, all actors, all directors, all playwrights. As an ensemble, the players will tell the tale of a group of Exiles. Whether that story is comedy or tragedy, history or farce, is up to the players to decide as the game runs its course. Along the way, the players characters may scheme, fight, deliver moving soliloquies, question their mortal nature and even forswear their solemn oaths, all in the name of applause. The action begins when the first character enters, and ends when all the Exiles are either married or dead.

In their own ways, Prospero, Miranda, Ariel, and Caliban seek release from their island bondage. The shipwreck of the King of Naples sets in motion a competition among these characters to fulfill their hearts’ desires before the drama draws to a close. All you need to play is a standard deck of 52 playing cards, a fair recollection of lines from Shakespeare’s play, and a few willing friends.

Here’s my submission for Gamechef 2011. It’s also the first game I ever wrote.

This is a game where you will play a group of mortal lovers whose relationships are tangled in a web of unrequited love, who stumble into the realm of fairies. You will also play the fairies that are toying with the mortals to confront them with the flaws in their characters and help them find true love. It is a game about people experimenting with identity (and having their identities experimented with) to find out who they are and what they really want.

You need:
Players: 3-8
Time: 2-4 hours (More players mean a longer game)
Materials: Note-cards, writing utensils, counters (glass beads, poker chips, coins, dice, or something like that)

Star-Crossed Lovers is my submission for the Game Chef 2011 contest, an rpg based on the works of Shakespeare and utilizing the keywords of daughter, exile, nature, and forswear. It was inspired by Much Ado about Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet (of course), and the rpgs Kagematsu and Misspent Youth.

In this game, the players take the part of Renaissance suitors, courting both the favor of their father-in-law and the affections of their bride or groom-to-be. While the rules assume a group of male suitors suing a father for the hand(s) of the patriarch’s daughter(s), the game could just as easily center around a group of ingénues or a mixed group visiting the villa with marriage on their minds. The action takes place over the course of a week spent at the default setting of an Italian villa owned by Signore Torregrossa. While the match is all but assured due to careful planning on the part of the suitors’ parents, what the suitors do and say during this week will determine the future happiness of their marriages.

AL harks back to the simpler days of yore and as such it is limited in scope, easy to understand, flawed in many ways, probably incomplete, and, hopefully, fun. The moniker “for advanced role-players” is just a flimsy excuse to not explain basic role-playing concepts.

AdventureLand has a sweet, if minimalistic setting and a funny cosmology. There is probably more in it but I did not take the time to develop the concepts further. Maybe I will later. Just note that AdventureLand’s Universe is not cruel, just terribly overworked.

I hope you like it.

The System universal role playing game was originally designed in late 1985/early 1986 when most games were still genre-specific, and before the first generation universal role playing systems were available on the market. The content of this book was recently rescued from oblivion, given a (very) quick polish to the ruleset, and typeset with a decidedly retro (1st generation) RPG feel to it. If you’re looking for an early-generation RPG ruleset (with all of its quirks and idiosyncrasies), then The System is for you.

The Synergy Role Playing Game, officially the first release for Raven Lake Games, has been updated to version 1.5! This RPG is designed with spontaneous storytelling in mind. This game provides a rules-light framework that is easy to understand, requires cheep common materials to play, and does not require any preparation time besides the time it takes to create a character. It is not tied to any particular setting or genre and allows each player to contribute equally to the development of the story.

Eleven hundred years after the God’s War, the world is still in chaos, trying to claw its way towards some semblance of normality. That goal remains a distant dream. Nations war with each other for dwindling resources, increased power and for revenge. Cultures clash over ideals and the right to exist. Meanwhile, the Cults of Darkness, long thought destroyed, slowly drag the world ever closer to the Abyss. Vhraeden is a place of stark contrasts where there are no limits for those cunning or violent enough to make their own rules and carve their own destiny.

Vhraeden is in turmoil and each aspect of this setting presents its own unique challenges and rewards. From swords, sorcery and guns for hire, to espionage, criminal and military operations, the world of Vhraeden is dangerous and multi-faceted. Characters are forces of order; professional spies, mercenaries, soldiers or police officers expected to keep the forces of chaos from spilling over into their nation. It is their job to keep their country and their people safe against those who would do it harm. Those enemies run the gamut from warlords to cultists. Do you have the strength to save yourself, much less your people?

This a complex and dark world where billions of sentient beings live and interact with each other as well as gods, devils and other unique beings. Within this milieu, conflict is inevitable. There is violence inherent in a world with over three billion beings spread over scores of nations, tens of races, hundreds of cultures and countless loyalties.

Running with the dead is an entry to the 1km1kt 24hr RPG contest. This year’s flavour is a Movie Mashup competition. There is an extensive list of movies to choose from, all of them very good ones!

I’d decided not to choose before hand, but select two at the beginning of the 24hr period. Some called this “going in cold like an echo”. However the truth is, I’m so busy with work, study, fatherhood and everything else life throws at you, I decided not to pressure myself with the competition, until I was ready to do it.

I present to you; Running with the dead, a mash up of Blade Runner and Dusk till dawn.

I don’t intend to adhere strictly to the source material. I consider it inspiration. Almost like a ronnies competition. This game is inspired by the movies and not a deliberate attempt to fuse them wholesale.

Inside you’ll find the setting, the rules and a sample adventure. I hope you have fun.

Feedback is encouraged and should be delivered to 1km1kt.net/forum

The end is near. The sounds of battle pound helplessly in the hearts of your victims as you choose from an array of deviants and miscreants, and of noble and honorable characters who dare enter the midst of bloodlust. Take one step in the wrong direction and it is over. Step over the boundaries and you suffer. Release the anguish of your alter-ego and pulverize your enemies to a quick and painful death. Or simply rearrange their plans so that they pant, waiting for a chance to commit their own crimes. Battles Armageddon gives you the power to control various Mobs whose abilities and spells are at your very whim. With over 35 Mobs and 75 Spells and/or Abilities, you are charged with millions of combinations in which you, the Player, may gain Rank and master the Mobs within. Choose well, for as soon as it begins, Armageddon will take over and there will be only one victor, you or your best friend.

This game was written for the 24 Hour RPG Movie Mashup Competition hosted in 1KM1KT. The idea was to mix two movies and make a game out of it. I picked Aladdin and Riders of the Lost Ark. From this movies came the idea of tomb riders in a fantastic version of ancient middle east, getting into trouble to find treasures protected by genies.

Whether it’s swashbuckling on the high seas, investigating a murder on Mars, or attending the court of King Arthur, the ParaSpace Role Playing System is a generic set of rules that can be used to play games set in a multitude of settings and styles.

This 60 page booklet is an abridged version of the ParaSpace Core Rules and is intended only as an introduction to sample some of the fundamental mechanics of the system. Whilst it is a replete work and, therefore, a stand-a-lone product itself, it does not contain all of the detail and omits many of the elements present within the Core Rules. However, it is completely compatible and consummates harmonious character transferral.

This is a game where you play teenagers, teenagers given awesome powers, these awesome powers perhaps are manifesting their emotions, driven by their desires, focused on another person, or perhaps it is not the emotions that manifest the powers, but being given those powers creates the emotional craving (as if they were some odd variety of vampires).

This is a game about harsh mistreatment of a man chasing his dream.

What “Beholden” is:

- A diceless solo RPG.

- An entry in the April 2011 Ronnies, using the terms “chains” and “queen”.

- A (_____) of Ben Lehman’s game “Beloved”. Choose your preferred term from the list: recontextualization; inversion; retelling; pastiche; critique. The draft of Beloved that Beholden is based on can be found here: http://www.indie-rpgs.com/forge/index.php?topic1271.0

- A direct response to Beloved, and a dialogue starter.

What it is not:

- Original. I wrote it, but it would not exist without Ben’s game.

- An “expansion” or “mod”. Beholden is fully self-contained.

- A challenge to the value of the source game.

This is a home-brew game that’s seen about 3 years worth of play-testing (on and off). It’s a generic ‘vanilla’ fantasy game; I know there are a lot of these around but please bear with me.

The design is loosely based on a game by Paul Elliott (Mithras in the RPG.net forums) called Dragons (and used with his permission).

Broadly speaking, it’s class based in that your starting point in the game is defined by the character’s class and certain tasks are easier or more appropriate for certain classes but it isn’t a black and white distinction, your warrior character can cast spells if you insist but that will ‘dilute’ his ability to kick butt in combat.

The game uses a standard 2-dice ‘roll-equal-or-over’ mechanic but keeps the modifiers to a minimum so there are very few numbers to juggle.

The system is ‘pass or fail’ with a slight difference in that if the PC’s roll fails, the opponent necessarily succeeds. So one dice roll determines the outcome of each combat round.

The upshot of this is that the referee never has to roll any dice. The game plays out on the strength of the players’ rolls. Not only does this give the ref. time to focus his or her attention elsewhere but makes the game quite convenient for play-by-board outings.

The magic system is quite strategic with magic-users having access to ‘magic points’ of differing colours. A spell can be countered if you can match it point-for-point and colour-for-colour so throwing an extra point into your spell makes it more difficult to counter.

Creatures are defined with a single attribute (like the Tunnels & Trolls Monster Rating) but special abilities are activated on specific dice roll results to keep the players guessing.

A sample dungeon adventure is included and if you haven’t guessed already the game is a tribute to old-school games in general and T&T in particular.

Sleeping within the darkness of ruined castles clinging to a mountain peak, howling within the woods, eerie lights luring travellers to their deaths in the swampland and fair and cruel riders on black steeds; amongst these you count yourself. You’re a nightmare creature, naught but a monster within a fairytale told countless times across the lands; a nightmare creature chained to a fate worse than death by the power of words. With each telling of your tale, of the town surviving the darkest creatures thrown at it through sheer tenacity, you are put through the motions and must once more prey on mortals, once more battle with the other evils. But even a monster can wish for something better than chains of words and bestial lusts.

You know that with each telling, with each battle with heroes and other monsters, the tale changes and takes new turns. And one day that winding tale might just bring you freedom.

She is the pride of your village, a young woman gifted with beauty, grace, and a gentle spirit. Now she’s gone – cruelly taken by the minions of the Queen of Thorns to their mistresses’ dungeon. There she will stay chained until the new moon comes, and with it the dark ritual to preserve the Queen’s haughty beauty at the expense of a young maid’s lifeblood. And it is all your fault . . .

You and your companions would not heed the elders’€™ warnings. You would not accept the dark fate intended for her, you could not live under the shadow of your guilt if you did nothing. Instead, you took up what weapons and other items you have and struck out toward the bastion of the Queen of Thorns.

The hulking shape of the Queen’s fortress is on the horizon. You look to your impromptu company and take heart knowing you will not be going into that damned place alone.

Meanwhile, she lies in the Queen’s dungeon, imprisoned by twisted chains of thorns that tear at her flesh. She weeps, bereft of everything except a faint glimmer of hope.

This game is about changing the world. It’s about fighting for something you believe in and care about and either saving it or seeing it destroyed. In this game, the characters are not dropped into a gigantic setting full of places and enemies the players will never face. Every facet of this game is there to be challenged or supported by the players during play. You want to overthrow the Queen?

Go for it. You want to stabilize the social situation of the city? You can. Want to discover the secrets of the ancient places of the world? That’s totally within your grasp. The setting of this game is there to get torn apart and rebuilt by the players according to their vision for it. The GM (Game

Master) is liberated to use anything mentioned in the setting section or serve up any NPC to the players as a challenge. Regard nothing as sacrosanct in this game. Playing Dreadsands means challenging yourself to find something you like or don’t like and making it better. Canon is a dead word here.

This RPG was created for the 2011 24 Hour RPG Contest. It is a mash-up of the two popular films Ghostbusters and Bladerunner.

It is the year 2099 and humanity is about to pass into the next century, but doom looms over everyone’s heads at the prophecy made by the internet hacker Dante – Humanity has reached the 9th Layer, they have made the ultimate betrayal. Now, as a Ghost Runner, you the players must track down rogue Ghosts, pulled from the afterlife and embedded into cybernetic SHELS which are used to hold these spirits to the world. Set against a not-so-different-but-still-dystopian future, be sure to bring your Flying Car.

This game uses the SotC SRD and features the use of Fate Points and Aspects. It also uses the new DOOM 8 d8 Rules Lite system.

A Fistful of Darkness is my first submission to the 2011 Movie Mash-up RPG design contest.I’ve always liked westerns, and the Man With No Name trilogy is my favorite. Originally I planned to use The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but the warring factions from Fistful of Dollars turned out to fit better, so I made a switch.I’m also a huge fan of Dark City, so trying to put the two of them together into something fun and interesting was the first idea I had. Many thanks to the organizers for giving me a reason to watch both of them again. The system itself was inspired by the one Fred Hicks used in Don’t Rest Your Head. I loved that idea of rolling multiple dice pools at once and determining the action’s results from the results. Hopefully my version of that idea turns out to be even half as fun. Most of the game ideas that I have worked on have been for open sandbox-y settings, with long-term play in mind. This is a bit different, probably working best over a few sessions, then ending. If it works as intended, that is.

Let me know what you think of it.

“Murder” and “Morning.” It is a horrible, brutal game, that no one should ever play, based on the concepts

In The Secret Lives of Serial Killers, two players deceive a third player into thinking they are playing a

“It’s a strange world out there. The old timers tell stories from the previous century, of great submersible ships exploring lost sunken cities and huge aerial vessels journeying across the face of the world. Those were just stories to most people, though, until the Great War. Only just over twenty years ago, it was when everything changed. Sure, the Wrights had led us into the sky, and Ford’s cars were already crowding the cities, but the real breakthroughs came when the aliens, in their monstrous towering contraptions landed on that day in the summer of 1917. The war ended right there, as both sides immediately had bigger problems to deal with. Shoulder to shoulder, the countries around the world fought the alien invaders. “Things looked bad at first, as the invaders’ death rays slew men and armoured tank alike, but humanity held and held, until the Germans broke the stalemate. Yellow clouds appeared on the horizon as they released deadly mustard gas into the war zone. It was an indiscriminate killer, and many a soldier still has nightmares of that day, but it broke the alien lines. Within hours their machines had stopped moving. We had won. The war never started back up, what with the nations of the world temporarily being more interested in what they could learn from the technology scattered around the field of corpses. Tesla made the first breakthrough. He had been claiming he could build a ray capable of making an end of war. With what the aliens left, he was soon able to show he was partly right. He could make a death ray. It wasn’t an end to war,
however, and the Spanish can attest. “Since that time technology has been racing forward, death rays, flying packs, computation devices, robots, where will it end?”

“I barely recognize the world any more.”

- Allen Stacy, The Bugle

Entry for the Ronnies 2011

A game about Crows;

Humans are stupid.

Maybe there are a few of them who are clever in their own
ways, but on the whole they don’t know much about the
world of the spirits, they don’t know what happens to them
after they die, they don’t even understand the damage they
are doing to the world they live in.

Most of the other intelligent Animals wrote them off as a lost
cause centuries ago, in a few more centuries they’ll wipe
themselves out. Only a few of us still care about them; but
the Dogs have become too close, forgetting their sacred pro-
tective duties, the Cats have always had agendas of their own,
the Rats have lost their way and many of the wild Beasts are
scared to walk into the great canyons of steel and glass.

As one of the few old races at home in the cities and the wild,
we are still able to do what is necessary. We might not be able
to restore the balance, but we can stop it getting too far out of
control. By imparting wisdom to the living, and bringing
back the dead, we can help the humans get things right. This
is still their world, even if they are killing it, but through
bringing back the dead ones willing to make a change, im-
parting wisdom to the ones willing to listen, and leaving the
right hints for the inquisitive, we can channel the humans
into making the changes that might just save us all.

The Volume of Secrets is a cooperative or competitive RPG where you take the role of an Angel that is trying to hide or expose a secret to the world by manipulating people and the environment. Join the Owls, and quiet the volume of the Whisper, or join the Ravens, and bring the whisper to a conversational tone. Be careful though, If a secret goes to quiet or goes to loud, you have the potential to become a demon, and lose the ability to adjust the volume forever.

The Stormlands are a world of flying islands, mountains of earth and stone, big and small, floating naturally in an endless sky without an horizon.

A people, whose civilization has stopped at feudalism, lives here and strives to survive, almost only from hunting, farming, and what little commerce is possible. A people that respects, worships and draws power from his Ancestors and from the Spirits of the sorrounding world.

A strange people. You are one of them.

A people of humanoid reptiles, each one different from the others: they are the Saurids, the Sons of the lizards. No Saurid is like another: tall or small, snake-like or brawny, with two or four arms, with small or protuberant eyes, with vivid or shy colors… The most variable combinations are possibles.

And some have wings. Not everyone, but some have them. They are very little, and many of them abuse of their freedom.

Who has wings, is one step above the others. He can travel, he can communicate, he can visit the islands searching for others like him, and gather them to subjugate the weaks.

In the Stormlands, who has wings often goes searching power and wealth. They are warlords, power-hungry aristocrats, tainted sciamans, greedy assassins and who knows what else.

Then one day, the massacre came to your home. The blood knocks at your door. It’s the blood of your relatives, shed from who have wings and use them to make other suffer.

But the blood knocked to the wrong door.

Because you have wings too.

So you can try the impossible: unlike all the others, you can track from island to island who killed your loved ones, you can search for him far away and in the end kill him without mercy. You can fly searching for your revenge, driven by your fury, because you have nothing to lose.

And here starts your story.

Here is my forge/Ronnie competition entry, based on the key words whisper murder.

description:

This is a game based on the court of Louis XVI, the last King of France, who was executed after the French revolution. His reputation is of a well meaning, but indecisive ruler who relied heavily on the effectiveness of his appointed advisors and was forever subject to the desires of the nobles who comprised his court. Any historical accuracy presented in this game is purely coincidental.

Each player takes the role of one of the nobles in Louis’s court, but their identity is kept secret from other players. The aim of the game is get a puppet King installed on the French throne who is beholden to the player’s character for his position. Untold wealth and favors then ensure. The trouble is, all of the other players are also angling for the same outcome with their own man. And of course there is the pesky business of running the country itself, lest the peasants revolt and chop off everybody’s head.

These unscrupulous, wannabe ”powers behind the throne” will stop at nothing to achieve their aims. Sex, scandal, blackmail, bribery, strong-arming, dueling and even murder are de rigueur.

An entry for the February 2011 Ronnies.

You’re a hard-boiled man (or woman) in a gritty, corrupt world. Lust, greed, vengeance, jealousy — one of these is the bitter taste in the back of your throat. Some might call it a sin. You call it a mission. And you’re not going to let anything stand in your way (except maybe your own flaws).

Meanwhile, the city is seething around you. The night is steamy, and ready to boil over at the slightest provocation. And in the shadows, steely eyes glint from above a demonic black beak, silently driving people into ever greater acts of desperation …

Waiting to unleash chaos and hell … with one mighty CAW.

Deathbird Black: Comedy noir. Tongue-in-cheek, dice-flinging fun.

Anathema is an entry for the February 2011 Ronnies, using the words “wings” and “murder”.

In this roleplaying game for two to six players, you play a Shroud. Once human, you are now an angel of death tasked with the culling of millions of human lives. To do so, you will use the powers of war, pestilence, famine, misfortune, atrophy, and despair at your fingertips to kill men, women, and children indiscriminately. This horrible act is nothing less than necessary, to decrease the surplus population of Earth in order to save the entire human race from extinction.

How can you kill millions of people to serve The Balance while clinging to the tatters of your humanity?

An entry for the 2011 Ronnies

Players are divided into four groups. You will want at least four players.
One player is the Witness, also known as the Game Master. They keep an eye on the time, signal for players to wrap up or continue scenes, and pass judgement over the proceedings. They do not portray a character, although in some parts they may play extra parts.
One player is the solider. They are the focal player of the game. The character that they play is a veteran of one or more wars, who is now senile and dying. Solider player: figure out your name, your rank, and what wars you fought in. The soldier wants peace and absolution before death, whatever that means to him.
The other players are divided between ghosts and family. Err on the side of more ghosts.

Memento Mori. Remember that you must die.

This Latin reminder, which rose to prominence during medieval outbreaks of the Black Death and which has served as a motif for artists and writers throughout history, remains universally true. There is no need to make exceptions or equivocate. We must die.

An old, weathered skull, flanked by vases, books, or other common household objects is one of the most widespread depictions of the Memento Mori. The image of a universal symbol of death in the center of the bits and pieces of mundane everyday life presents a clear message: don’t be complacent or falsely confident, death is always present and always possible.

This is the same message presented by the Danse Macabre, the dance of death, a motif used in painting, sculptures, engravings and other art, particularly during the Middle Ages. The Danse Macabre depicts men and women of all ages and social classes dancing among skeletons and corpses, reminding viewers that even during life’s most joyous and frivolous moments, death is nearby. All of life’s hectic, rhythmic steps must end in a full stop.

Danse Macabre is a role-playing game about death. It uses content, scenes and mechanics based on the Memento Mori and the Danse Macabre to allow players to engage with death and mortality. In Danse Macrabre, the lives of characters are short and, often, incomplete. One player character dies during each cycle of scenes, and players will actively take on the role of a personified Death. The game uses music and a mechanic loosely based on musical chairs to simulate the dance. Ultimately, Danse Macabre culminates in a series of direct confrontations (and conversations) with Death where the characters and, eventually, Death itself must answer difficult questions about how and why we die.

Facing the End is a roleplaying game for a single player. The point of play is to explore themes of Grief, Regret, and Loss associated with End of Life. This is accomplished in the setting of a fantasy world where the Protagonist of the game is asked to sacrifice himself to save humanity, and in the process he brings about the personal Loss and Regrets pertinent to the Themes.

In this game, you take the role of The Master Wizard, an ageing veteran wizard who is approaching the end of his or her life and now realizes that the accomplishment that made him or her famous was but a fleeting victory. Prior to yet again performing the Ritual that made him or her famous, he or she must vanquish any lingering Grief or Regrets, and overcome his sense of Loss at the prospect of losing his or her life.

This was my submission for the Ronnies and utilizes the ingredients of Old and Soldier. Inspirations come most directly from an exercise I participated in during my palliative care clerkship in medical school, which taught me a lot about Loss, how an RPG might work as a solo experience, as well as how to make game elements intensely meaningful to players. Other inspirations include the boardgame Pandemic, various RPGs including but not limited to Dogs in the Vineyard, The Leverage RPG, Capes, Committee for the Exploration of Mysteries, Apocalypse world, and the 1st edition AD&D DMG!

As a first draft, it needs many things, most especially a little playtesting.

Demilich is my entry for the 2011 Ronnies, using skull and old as ingredients.

You were once an ancient, powerful wizard, your power unrivaled except by the Gods! Your
magic had even preserved you; for a time. Flesh became gaunt; gaunt flesh became bones,
bones became brittle, until finally you’re just a skull on a shelf. Sure, you still have eons of
experience and knowledge at your command, but no hands!

You try and exert your influence over those that come across your paths. You’ve built networks
of spies, gotten comfortable in your new digs when someone starts swiping up all the talent.
Seems like there’s other skulls out there, wielding their power in your turf and that JUST.
WONT. DO!

Demilich is a 2-3 player competitive story strategy game where you will play a demilich (a
magical ancient skull), build their fortress, minions and network of influence and destroy those of your competitors. Explore the angst and isolation of being a magical skull…or just crush your opposition. The game plays in approximately 2 hours from start to end.

The remote farming community of Durum had to learn to make do without its husbands, fathers, and brothers, and 200 years later, things look very different: women run things now, the men all stay at home with the children, and no one can say for sure if the empire, what took the men to war back when, still stands.

But the patrols have brought back word of finding someone not-from-Durum on their rounds. Who could it be? Is there still an empire out there? What became of those ancestral, missing men?

You’re the heroine of a strict, Spartan culture, forced to face the world again after all this time. May you live into your Third Age, sister!

This is my entry to the Ronnies award.

My game is called the Knights of Twilight.

It is a game about fencing.

Quite a lot of RPGs have tried to construct a realistic simulation of a sword duel or swordplaying, so far. As far as I understand swordplaying, with almost 10 years of fencing competitions on my shoulders, they all failed. This game, or at least the state of development in which this game is so far (very starting), wants to bring to the players the very thrill of instant-decision that is both tactical and practical; that a “life on the edge” which is the very momentum in the life of a fencer. An edge that is sharp, quick, and deadly.

I added some dark-fantasy color to it, because I always found interesting to explore a character that is a hero, but because of his ties to darkness. A double-edge that is both source of hope and damnation.

In Empire of the Jade Fist, players talk on the role of young experts and master the ancient arts of wushu in the mystical land of Zhong-guo, also known as the Empire of the Jade Fist, after the magical artifact owned by the Emperors of Zhong-guo. Zhong-guo is a vast land full of advanced cities, tiny villages, huge farms, dangerous wildernesses, thick forests, parched deserts, forbidding mountains and wide rivers, populated by wushu masters, scholars, monks, merchants, bandits, villains, magical monsters and many simple common folk trying to avoid all of the above. Will you master wushu or die trying?

In World of Xantus (WoX), players take on the roles of the descendants of humans captured by aliens and transported, for unknown reasons, to another planet. However, soon after depositing the humans on this new world, the aliens promptly and mysteriously died, leaving behind their huge Ship, its nearly incomprehensible technology, and 1000 scared-out-of-their wits people. The planet, called by the aliens “Xantus” (human pronunciation and spelling, and one of the few things the aliens communicated to their abductees), is large, hot, and covered in deep, thick jungles filled with very hostile plants and animals. Many of the humans died not long after the Abductors, due to starvation, alien diseases, and conflict, but about 300 survived and managed to master to some degree the aliens’ technology.

UPDATE 03/21/11: File removed per author’s request.

Several years ago, myself and Dave Sharrocks met with B7 Media (the current owners of Blake’s 7) to discuss the possibility of a rpg in the Blake’s 7 universe.

Talks went quite well, so we produced a draft of a game that would hopefully form the basis of the full B7 role playing game.

However, during our meetings it became evident that there were huge licensing issues with the property and talks stalled and then all went quiet.

In the attached zip file is a word.doc of the rules together with a pdf with some artwork taken from all over the web to pretty-fy the rules a bit. There are also 2 cover designs that Dave was playing with before the whole thing went kaput.

I hope that rather than just gathering cobwebs on my hard drive, somebody might like to see the beginnings of what might have been had the B7 license been easier to negotiate.

Please don’t expect a polished & playtestyed product. The rules probably hang together but may need some work if you are going to use them for any length of time.
