Seeing as it's the middle of the night in the USA, we're unlikely to have any new registrations from bone-fide humans so I'm going to clear them now.

So how did it go?

I think there was only one person who hadn't had their account switched on and got in touch, otherwise I think we're in the clear. I wrote a nice note, apologised and switched his account on immediately after.

It took two tries as the PHP script timed out after 30 seconds - halfway through.

We're clean - for a while.

I got an MSN from Keeton, who is tired of the Spam accounts too. I hope he managed to upgrade or patch so that the better spam-stoppers is put in. Then we can remove the draconian measures of me turning on the accounts.

Yeah, I noticed the number of members (or should that be "members"?) listed drop by about 6,000!!!!!

Right, I've just burnt a lot more spammers. Sorry if you got caught up in that.

I've also improved the registration by adding a question to prove someone's humanity. As such, I've changed the 'awaiting moderation' user group to Rob Lang's Registered users and updated the permissions. If it doesn't work and we get a load of spammers, I'll put it back.

Spambots should not be able to get in with the new question: What is th surname of the President of the USA?

I think a few spammers might get through using this method but we'll see. If they are then they're probably spammers who registered before my change.

This is my test account. Just testing.

Did a final blat of users called kjsdhfklsdhfsdfh@gmail.com and the like. Hopefully my cunning anti-spam question will hold firm while I'm away.
