How I ended my 2009 Icar campaign... free comic!

My last Icar campaign was a lot of fun. Although still Sci Fi, the characters were low powered drop outs from society. The players kept the campaign rolling along, often by random acts of violence and a good time was had by all.

I had remembered reading a Gnome Stew article the year before about ending the campaign on purpose and as the game came to a close, I decided to mark the end with a surprise comic depicting the campaign as a whole and then having a wrap party (dinner at an Italian restaurant). It took me a good couple of months to do (in the evenings and weekends), finishing off the book just as the players completed the game. This seemed fitting for a campaign where the characters would often get the munchies at the worst possible time and demand lemon cake. And the players too, come to think of it.

I like to pull the book out to remember the stories of the campaign and I know it was appreciated by the players too: a happy memento from two years worth of gaming. Now you can have it too.

Have you ever done anything to wrap up a campaign?

Funny so far

But never ended my long running TS/SI Campaign from '87-88 and still ongoing, the players have changed, the team of changed but Project OMEGA still carries out the mission of keeping the world a safe place.

Wow, just reading through took a while, I could imagine the players causing havoc all the way.

I'll tell you that gave me a really good flavor of how the Icar universe is as you imagine it. It's probably not a good introduction for a really new player, but for someone who's role played before they can pretty easily fill in the blanks.

We've recapped campaigns by trying to remember how they went and I tried writing them down, it's really hard to do. Thankfully two of my players have logs of the games with brief notes and from that I can usually remember the rest. This is a really cool way to wrap up a campaign!

I just remembered one of the better ways we finished up a campaign a few years back...I think it was mid 2009, we'd run a six month Serenity/Firefly campaign and wanted a definitive end point.

For that, we all dressed up as our respective characters and played a game of poker, where the stakes were the chance to describe the final outcome for our characters and the world around them. If you ended up with more chips you could spend them to have more control over your character's final destiny, spend them to eliminate enemies once and for all, otherwise you could cause complications or leave some kind of legacy in the world.

I can't remember specifics, but I remember that it turned out like one of those "end of season" wrap-up episodes that so many TV shows have.

I remember that a fun night was had.

I wish we'd kept some kind of permanent record though.
