Public Domain Photography

When I released the rules for D6Pool under a Creative Commons license, I could not do the same thing for the illustrations because I hadn't licensed them that way from the artist. This creates the weird situation where the text is "CC By", but the images are all rights reserved.

For follow on books, I'm trying to derive all of the illustrations from public domain photography or artwork. I had a hard time at first, but I came across . I found a lot of what I needed there, and I've uploaded a dozen or so of my own photos as partial payback.

Does anyone know of other, better sites, or is anyone aware of issues I should know about with this site? I'd appreciate any advice.

I draw most of my stock photography from members of deviantArt, many of whom are happy to see their work exposed to a wider community. A lot of these people share their work under creative commons as it is, and for most of the rest they simply want to be credited as the original source. If you're releasing the product for free, you should have no problems getting your photos from most members of that community if you have a quick chat with the person who took the shot.

Of course, some people aren't so nice; so just be open about your intentions.

All great tips here. I have a rather old article on free images that might help.

Although looking at it - I could probably do another revision of it.
