Finishing off one campaign while writing the next

My current campaign is coming to a (hopefully epic) close. All of the wheels are in motion, no new plots and only tying up of loose ends. Events I didn't get around to will stay in the ideas bin and unmet NPCs will sleep until needed.

Another player is taking the GMing reigns for a while, which will give me time to bed the setting in. This is a change from the norm where I enter a campaign in a headlong rush; I have the start and end worked out with a lot to do.

So now I'm in that difficult period of having a campaign running and writing a new one. Compartmentalising all that is tough, not to mention the extra workload.

The crunch
The worst bit is remaining excited about the current campaign while writing the new one. That's the crunch. I'm gripped about the new stories I want to share but I have to keep focussed on the current one at the same time. I've also got the Fleet Setting bouncing around in my head but that's less of a problem that I'm now onto the artwork.

I'm looking forward to playing with the new GM which will give me headspace to get this new campaign sorted out.

How long have you been playing the campaign? I was not yet able to end a campaign since my old group ended when I moved somewhere else and my new one is still in the middle of the first storyarc after 12 sessions.

18 months. I think it's a sweet spot for my players. I think they could go longer but I tend to run out of really interesting story arcs but that point!

How long are your usual ones?
