Hi there,

I am assigned to write the music for a German independent point-and-click RPG. It's about a cat named Miguel in the role of a detective finding the murder of his master. Most likely it will be freeware and hopefully there will be an English translation. I would like to know what you think about these pieces (especially concerning the mix). I spent a lot of time into this project.

Thanks a lot and best regards :)

Dustin

I'll check these out in a little bit when I have a proper chance to listen.

I'm listening to On the Prowl. The problem I have with it is that it's intrusive. The drum is very strong as opposed to the melodic aspects. I get the "cat" feel so that's good, but I would have a very hard time concentrating on the game with such a strong drumbeat. I'd mute the drum down a bit and bring up the melody. Until you get to the crescendo that is, It's a bit too much and could distract instead of enhancing play. Now, I'm not in front of the game playing so I can't say any of that for sure. Maybe it wouldn't cause a problem.

Okay, map screen music. I don't mind the tune, but it's just trying to grab my attention away from the game. It feels like it would be okay at first, but get more an more irritating as I hear it. Maybe I'm a bad test case though because I tend to turn off music (or even sound) when playing games so take my impressions with a grain of salt.

Downtown chase. This just feels too slow for a chase scene. I feel like going on an aggressive walk or maybe a furious search, but it doesn't say "chase" to me.

End Credits, I'd put the the title theme sequence first. If I just won the game, that's the game's crescendo, the music should match and then let me down slowly from there. Think about the end song from Portal. It starts with "This was a triumph" and then works it's way down to saying why you didn't really win. It's one of the best end credits songs and it starts you off feeling awesome and then brings you back down to the ground.

I'm a bit late to the party, but here are my thoughts:

Overall, I like the mood!

Onix wrote about this, but I want to stress it as well: if this is "background music", it should be less intrusive and more "ambient". Maybe a more up-beat version of ? ;-)

As for the first track, the drums should definitely be much lower in the mix! Especially as they are programmed, they get a bit boring. Drums don't "prowl" - the bass prowls, so maybe those elements should be more prominent. A nice, tonally rich and warm "walking" double bass.

I mostly agree with Onix, but for me "Downtown Chase" seems okay, temp-wise! I envision not a fast-paced car chase, but rather back alley labyrinths and jumping across rooftops, so the slower temp seems fitting.
