So I was waiting around, helping a friend with a chore. and I came up with.....another game idea (I know this never happens to anyone here.....right?) I do my normal system building (sorry I'm from the camp that if the system sucks...the setting is just story not game) and have a game I like....but rather then type up the system (I was working on paper when this started) I'd work on the setting first (IE. the setting is the chapter before the rules) So to help myself along here is the opening story for you all to read #yes its a work in progress) while I type up the setting in MS word.

"Eye's heavy, mind numb, feeling rather good despite it" These were the thoughts of the man in seat 13C. As he becomes more aware New thoughts begin to blossom. "I'm dead, I died in 2007, I was 32. I killed myself. Jumped off a bridge. I was....unhappy with my life." With new memories come new questions...New holes unfilled. "why am I so calm about death? Why can't I remember anything about my life besides my death? What is my Name?" His mind would have raced on forever had not a gentle hand landed on his shoulder. He looked up to see the sweet smile of a stewardess "Hey hun, you need anything? You were tossing somethin' fierce." This Bob-cut cutie, this flapper fox somehow made all his questions moot. He was dead, existence goes on. With that the world around him sprang into awareness. The sound of the props of the plane beating fast and steady. The smells of perfume and Cologne, dancing from the clean cut souls. The feel of this woman's hand. He was now fully apart of his new world. "Yeah doll, just settling in. Say how long till we land? Do I got time to light one?" He smiled, adjusting a hat he now knew was on his head. She smiled apologetically "sorry sugar, will be getting ready to land in a jif." He laughed "Just ain't my day for it I guess. Thanks though" as she passed him by he could only laugh at his near instant understanding of his new world.
Moments latter the intercom clicked in, "This is your Capitan speaking. We ask you to kindly fasten your seatbelts and extinguish your C. Nails. We are beginning are descent into Purgatory Hub airport. The time is 13:23, as usual its over cast this eve. We know you have many choices, so thank you for flying D.A.T. airline."

more to come when I think of it!

Blindly he grabed the bag above him. Just knowing it was his. Walking to the front of the plane he bids the Bob-cut bell a quick goodbye and desended down the stairs to the runway. A short stroll and he found himself in the terminal proper. He walked to the baggage claim, somehow knowing that a simple black steamer trunk belonged to him. Standing in the airport with his luggage, he was at a loss as to his next move. A moment of despair latter his eye's cought a stand with a large "new to death?" sign. Picking up his bags he walks gently over. "Hello sir, You look like a soul in need of a plan or two.... Am I right?" the neatly dress man in the stand seems to enter into his rant almost instantly. "here is your first step son, a name. can't remember your's? Cause you don't have one! SO my friend you need a new one, sweet, neat, and complete." He thought then wrote the first thing to come to him, Sam Wraith...

First time post, I was just noodling when I found your thread, it encouraged me to register..

I was just thinking, you could also use this idea for the player characters that die during other campaigns, just kinda hold them in limbo, until you have enough, then surprise the players with a set of old friends..

I was particularly thinking of system cross over, then in the new 'afterlife' campaign maybe re-skinned into your new game...

Thanks for the ideas...

Dante's Divine Comedy has some interesting views of purgatory if you're interested in more fluff.
