I Play the THE CREATURE OF MURKY COUNTY RPG!

The game simulates some of the plot from BOGGY CREEK II: AND THE LEGEND CONTINUES a movie that can normally only be survived by watching it as an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.The legend of the Fouke Monster aka the Big Foot of Arkansas aka the Creature continues and continues in the movies and you just want it all to end.The RPG took the hokey events of the movie and turned them into a "serious" game with out the humor of MST3K or the flaws that made the movie worthy of an MST3K episode.In the game, you want the search for the Creature to continue as you explore Murky County,gaining bonuses.This is because meeting the Creature is deadly, especially if you aren't "prepared" with the various bonuses. Most of the places you search in Murky County will either send you on further along your search,present danger or provide opportunity and sometimes all of these.Many places are different depending on whether it is day or night.This increases both the amount of possible play and the length of time you could play this single page with out getting bored or seeing the same things happen.

Murky County's creator, Errin Famiglia, is a prolific game designer on 1k1mkt.net and the person responsible for The Character Sheet Is The RPG Challenge II 2007. The one page game is growing into a new cutting edge genre of role playing games, and solo RPG games, such as THE CREATURE OF MURKY COUNTY definitely have a place in it.

Analysis

The longer you survive in Murky County, the better your chances of gaining the sometimes required bonuses to beat the Creature. The higher your scores are the more likely it is that you can take advantage of an opportunity to gain bonuses.The Creature, Old Man Crenshaw and other dangers through out the game add a strong element of risk.The Creature is a powerful and elusive boss type since it takes above average scores in all areas obtained through game play to beat, outsmart and finally dominate the Creature, while as the Creature can easily wound,traumatize and horrify you with each failed rolled.

Status quo It is acknowledged that reading is an indispensable part of English language learning. As one of the productive skills, reading can be a good reflection of students’ general level of English. However, the reading ability of English learners in China has long been staying poor, which is frequently revealed in their inter-language full of expression with Chinese characteristics. Take the College English Text Band Four and Band Six for example, most of students fail the exam for rather weak of reading ability and lost too much marks in the part of reading comprehension. Some experts and teachers take it for granted that reading is a task that can be left for students to practice on their own, while other scholars consider it as a harder aspect among the four basic skills of language learning. In recent years, English newspapers reading (ENR) course has become a compulsory course in many high schools and universities. A common phenomenon is that a great many of students are not able to read Chinese passages of English in textbooks, not to mention reading original English articles in newspapers. Why so many students have difficult in reading, especially in English newspapers reading? There are many reasons. On one hand, they pay no attention to English reading and have little experience in reading. On the other hand, they don’t know how to read for the lack of effective methods and skills. According to the results of my questionnaire of 100 English learners, I find 78% learners are interested in English newspapers reading, and 65% learners find it difficult to read foreign articles, and only 36% learners have their own ways to read. When they read English newspapers, many problems appear. The problems can be listed as follows:⑴ too many unfamiliar vocabularies;(2) passive attitude;(3) way of thinking in Chinese;(4) confusing about foreign culture.That’s why so many students have difficult in improving general level of English. Do anything, and methods are the most important. In order to improve English through reading English newspapers, the study of reading skills are quite necessary and urgent.1.2 Learning theories This part builds up a theoretic framework to support the utilization and skills of English newspapers reading in the teaching of English reading.1.2.1 Krashen’s Input HypothesisDuring the last two decades, Krashen’s Input Hypothesis have gained substantial acceptance in second language education. It is widely believed that the most effective way of learning a foreign language is to study it in the target language community. The Input Hypothesis claimed “humans acquire language in only one ?Cway-by understanding messages or by receiving comprehensible input” . Krashen, in 1992, also stated, “any program designed to stimulate both language and cognitive development needs to include a great deal of reading, especially free voluntary reading” . And I believe reading can promote language development because interesting and comprehensible input will result in language acquisition. As Gardrer, he has pointed out a most effective way to produce large-scale vocabulary growth through an activity reading, providing more comprehensible input seems to be a more reasonable strategy. English newspapers are quite abundant of foreign information and original works. Reading and listening belong to language input.
