Computer Games That Have Inspired you To Write

Have computer games inspired you to write a rpg based on the game. It needed be "insert title" the rpg; but the theme, rendering of the world, play style, setting have these been the genesis of a game design.

Dog Town was inspired firstly by PC title called "Kingpin" and then further modelled on Grand Theft Auto. There were other media influences as well but these were the platforms.

Again with Snuff: Downloads of Death the main inspiration was the xbox video game title Manhunter, which provided the chasis upon which to construct te idea on.

What video games have heavily influenced your writing or have they not?

Great topic!

Icar went very interstellar because of Frontier Elite 2. Wandering around the galaxy doing deals, fighting off pirates and so on was great fun. I wanted to emulate that - the game didn't change hugely, I just let the leash off the players and added more space travel.

Dog Town is brilliant. Simply brilliant. It feels very much GTA and Shaft to me. GTA IV should have been set in Dog Town, rather than the somewhat bland 90s.

I wanted to write a game on the Bitmap Brother's Chaos Engine some time ago. It was a top-down shooter with a steampunk feel to it. I didn't get around to it.

I would like to write an RPG based on Fallout 3 but someone else got there first and it is much better than I would do.

I love the Elite series! You can now download them for free. First encounters is now community modified almost beyond recognition

I guess insperation comes from many things. For me computer games are a great source to plunder from! I would love to do some games based on the old games like interstate 76, Super frog, colonization (sorry about the Z, but its american). Basically all Computer RPGs could translate into Pen and Paper, The Eldar scrolls series would be good to see. Although it would be difficult to make a game like any of these without simply apeing it.

Dogtown's insperation is clear, however it's defenitly it's own uniqe entity.

I've always wanted to translate Arcanume into a P&P RPG. just and all around great setting.

Most of the games I play on the comp. are far from the RPG category.

Gangland started off as a very basic universal system, indeed - more of a test of a new layout and new program. (First time I ever used Open Office.) However, at some point the idea became to go for the style of Grand Theft Auto. Hence why cars have only three stats (Speed, HP, Handling) so you can go through them like Kleenex as you do in that game.

On and off I've toyed with the idea for an RPG called Game Logic. The big idea - what would society be like if we lived in the kind of world portrayed by first person shooters? We start off with the idea that instead of levels the character has the classic progression of weapon slots - pistol, SMG, Rifle, shotgun etc. When you reach that given level, you can carry items of that class with no encumbrance or visible change in your appearance (hyper space backpack?) First aid kits work instantly, and jumping puzzles are part of everyday transit.

Then again, its an interesting gimmick, but really hard to get you head around just how screwed up the world would be. Factor in that I'd probably need different combat mechanics based on what you're trying to do (ie multi-stage boss fights vs sweeping away mooks) and all the other games I've got going, and there is a reason this is one of those in my notes only projects.

I haven't played all that much of the Resident Evil cannon (pretty much just #2) and its hard to separate the influence of that from the zombie genre in general - but its worth noting that my anarchy zones setting has a few nods to that series. (Mostly in that there is more than one type of zombies, and Type-III/Kappa reanimates are similar to the Tyrant/Mr.X/Nemesis boss creatures from those games.)

Command and Conquer is one of my favorite video games, but even if the thought of an R{G set in that world has crossed my mind, its probably not the best idea. Deus Ex is another wonderful game, and pretty close to an RPG in its basic form - adapting it to the table top wouldn't be hard at all.

By the way, I know there is a fan-made unisystem supplement for Arcanum, though I can't seem to find it at the moment.

The X-Com series could make for a great pen&paper game, though I must confess I have always been too intimidated by the original to actually try to write one myself. Over the years I have seen a few attempts at one, but to my knowledge no one has actually completed a full game yet.

I *LOVE* Xcom! Well i love the first one UFO enemy unknown (UFO Defence in USA), the rest were pants.

Someone has done a savage worlds conversion

However It surely deserves its own game.

well I don't know about "inspired" but the mechanics in L4D and TF2 and I guess other ones help me to think of balancing stuff. I particularly like the 'fall down' mechanic in L4D, where when you get to 0 HP you fall on the ground and can't get up until someone helps you (by giving you a pep talk); which gets you all your HP back. And then it uses the traditional "lives" thing where you can do that three (four?) times before your Kill Off For Real (until you come back later).

That'd be cool to have a Pep Talk skill that could bring people back from the brink of death and stabilize their health. "During the revival process, the rescuer does not physically help the downed teammate; they just encourage them by talking to them and making gestures." [that's from the L4D wiki article on Health]

I guess I don't play that many computer games. Few games spring to mind as inspirational. Midian's Host of Battle come from playing Medieval: Total War (and is why their colour scheme is the reverse of the Swiss from that game). The Far-criers guild is inspired by team-chat in mmorpg's, though I have never played any.

The only other influences that come to mind are the design portions of Armoured Core and a similar pc game whose name escapes me at the moment. I may use something similar in a scifi game someday. I also think the monster generators from Gauntlet are untapped rpg potential.
