Robert Bohl has proposed a new contest that I think suits 1KM1KT perfectly -

Design and print an RPG without spending any money. No money for art. No money for software. No money for printing.

I recommend the for a list of open resources, from software to graphics to entire rule sets.

Superb find, Sanglorian. I think this is a great contest idea! Freegan is also a great word. I might just make use of it!

Open Office is a bastard for Free RPGs because of the formatting/background problems. Scribus is much better. During my 24 hour entry, I had terrible trouble getting Open Office to set a background. Grrrrr.

is a good suggestion for this. Freegan requires you use a computer that you didn't buy (not stolen, though). Therefore, library/school computers might not allow you to install OO or Scribus. Leaving you with online tools.

Or work computers if you've got admin access (whistles).

Don't forget gimp {}and that Yahoo Image search now has a filter for CC images that you can use.
