Some Publishing Ideas
Posted: Sun Nov 21, 2010 11:11 pmMy brother recently pointed out to me that the Barns and Nobel chain of book stores now has an E-Publishing service called "". I'm not sure how this compares to Lulu or IPR just yet, but it looks interesting. From what i can tell, it lets you set up text in a blogger style interface, set your price, and BN gets some percentage of the sales but doesn't otherwise charge for the service.
Another interesting service I found is . Its essentially a micro-loan/donation aggregation - start a project, set a funding goal, and make a pitch. If people like it, they can pledge as much or as little as they want, and if the goal is made within a certain deadline - you get the money. Most project leaders set various suggested levels of donation, and offer things like a signed limited edition version, first preference in ordering, or a reduced price for the final product.
Within kickstarter is a section for games, and within that is something called . I find this notable as their donation pledges get thanks within the book, or an early copy - or the chance to have you suggestion used in the game (Your name as a major NPC or Location.)
This last point is one that I am considering. While I don't feel comfortable begging for money to finance my work just yet (I've still got to finalize rules, finish some of the basics of the world, and haven't even thought about art!) I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of allowing people who give me feedback or play-testing tales a place in the world. It would probably be something along the line of your group showing up as the leaders of some small outpost or a city in Europe.
