I'm going to run a PbMB called "Streets of Denton" soon, if I can get 3-5 players.

I'd like some names put up for places and some opinions on tone, etc.

Well, I have three basic settings I was working on for a Gangland Game. However, I would really prefer to see how someone else develops the rules and runs the game. I don't get much of a chance to play my own games, and product testing requires I sit back and watch how people work and understand it, so I know what to clarify.

At some point I was thinking of a game set in San Narcissco - the setting of Thomas Pynchon's "The Crying of Lot 49". Its just kind of a sprawling suburb south of Los Angeles, that seems to run rife with literary allusion until you can't tell if there's some sort of conspiracy, or your going crazy. Much of the book is about the main character trying to learn if there really is an underground alternative to the postal service - or is her communication just breaking down in her head. If you have ever read the web comic "Mixed Myth" they invoke the laws of drama/"cynamatik" as kind of a animate force/godhead. Same thing here - your a criminal with style, not just making ends meet.

A second setting was this factory town/planned settlement that failed - a bit like Night City from Cyberpunk-2020. Its all "communist architecture" boxy concrete five floor walk ups, a port that gets very little (legal) trafic, three casinos (30s serials/50's sci-fi/Round the world themed respectively) and an airport that has only one runway and half the terminal finished. I actually used this for a Vampire game, making all the head Mafioso Vamps, along with the raids by the Gangrel Biker gang led by Tabias Welworth (According to his bio, he beat a vampire hand to hand before he was turned...)

Finally, I did make a partial layout for the type of one building arcrology city I mention in the addendum.

Of course, we should also open this to the pros and cons of using a real city.

Tone wise, combat is pretty deadly without some of the optional rules or a steady supply of body armor, so I'd avoid heroism. Having everyone part of a crime family, or at least employed by the same fence would help bring together a group - I’d guess moss criminals would work alone otherwise.

Denton is fictional, but modern and realistic for a northern American town.

As for tone, that's up to the players to agree on but I'd prefer to cater for less heroic stuff.
I'll help bring characters together and I have a couple of ideas how, possibly referenceing a popular computer game.

This guy started off as a sample fo complete character creation answering the various questions I provide for character.

James Bordeaux (Borr-doguh, as in French Canadian father)

Smarts: 35, Muscle: 30, Speed: 45, Savior Fair: 30
Hp: 75, Carry/Haul: 60/120, HtH:3d10

Automobile: 20
Handgun: 10
Breaking & Entering: 30
Security: 30
Climbing: 40
Awareness: 25
Safe Cracking: 25
Appraise: 20
Acrobatics: 20
Hide: 20

1.James Bordoqux, 32, Lansing Michigan, currently resides in Antigo Wisconsin

2.Snuck in an out of old building in Lansing and Flint for kicks. Decided to see if skills had market value in late teens. It went full time after the machine shop was closed down.

3.Friends definitely - still see my old buddies from time to time.

4. don’t think I could really kill someone. The rest of that stuff is too f--ed up for me!

5.Blond, Blue Eyed, Tall - and my father’s Jewish so don’t give me any of that nazi Aryan crap! Also got some scars on my knuckles and hands from working in the tool dies.

6.It’s the northern US man - any gun you want! Still, I was never too good in the accuracy department, so I’ll go for something that keeps their head down.
Part of the reason I’m in Antigo now is that it’s the middle of nowhere - the closest major settlement is a boy scout camp. You can get a 3 story house on a lake for 900 bucks a year property taxes. More DNR and FDA agents than police up here. Plus I got a small shack in the woods if my main dig is raided.
I’m a cat burger, nuff said. Can’t reveal my tricks. Will mention I like eggplant parmesan though.

7. Well, I still see my friends, and there’s this girl - but can’t just steal a ring you know - don’t want cops breaking up the vows now. ‘Corse that means I need quite a bit more money.

8. I don’t think there’s much a cat burglar could do legit. Unless the CIA was hiring, but the whole James Bond thing is BS (Conrey over Brosnan by the way) and the real cyanide pills and deny your existence stuff is scary. Worked in a machine shop during high school, but I’ve forgotten most of it.

9. umm, can I pass? So that’s a no. Ok, I know it’s a crime. I got to eat too. ITs also a thrill, but you don’t need a cliff like hang-gliding, or run into sharks like scuba. If I had a legit job, I’d still do this on weekends.

10.Ring, and a honeymoon somewhere tropical. Maybe a payment on a new car - but you can’t get a Camero for that little.
