A neat little game that you can play by yourself about a crew of a survey ship trying to get back home.

Neat!

I haven't tried it yet. During your tests, was the D8 enough to generate enough skill points for the Captain to be playable?

What dice do you use for rolling against skills? Does the skill die depletion represent gaining experience (as this is a roll-under mechanism)?

Edit: oh, I understand now! The resource gives you the dice type, nice.

You got the dice rolling. A d8 does not usually give you a lot to deal with. A lot of times you have to make hard choices about being bad at skills. That's really where the game gets dangerous. I ranked the skills according to most needed to least needed to give the player an idea of how to choose but getting hit with the need to pass a roll that you don't have any skill in can hurt a lot. You might be able to get by with just the first three skills but if you're stuck trying to replenish a resource and you don't have the skill, 5 skill points hurts a lot.

There's a new layout for The Lost that's perfect for printing in booklet form.
