I wound up waiting until the last minute but I've just submitted a 24 hour rpg. It's an offbeat supers game.

Until it's up on the site, you can access it from:

I didn't have time to do live comments so here's a rundown of how it went down.

Soon after it was announced, I looked at the choices. I decided to roll randomly 3 times and choose the best two. At that point, I knew that magic pants were super hero clothing (why else would they wear their underwear on the outside?) and that power animals were mutant weapons. I realized that I could use underwear for the character sheet. I knew nothing else.

I'm thinking I can either take a day off work to write and clean or work in some time on a weekend. Due to stuff in life, that never happened. I was probably going to miss the deadline.

Morning of the last day, I woke up at 2:30 and couldn't get back to sleep. This is rare. Rather than going "woe is me, I'll be so tired tomorrow." I got up and decided to start writing around 3. If I didn't do it now, I'd probably never get to the idea.

As is often the case when making stuff for games, I started in Excel. Charts are how I see much of a game and it's easy to paste Excel cells into Word. Once the charts are done, I start writing, almost entirely in the order that things appear. The mechanics had to be dirt simple as I didn't have time for anything elegant.

7 am, time to get ready for work. I have a big dataset to finish and the data is messy for several reasons. I'm heavily caffeinated so I'm not tired so much as delirious. College trained me to work in this state so I'm actually more productive than usual, but not good in dealing with people. It's ok, I tell them I need to get the dataset done.

3:30 It's done and sent off. I have an hour an a half. The deadline is midnight Greenwich but I don't have an easy way to convert to pdf at home so I have to be done by 5 in time to go pick up the kids. I go back over it quickly. I add NPCs and an adventure stub. Add a sentence here and there. Waste 15 minutes trying to add a new font, doesn't work. I'll go with a preloaded one.

4:15 Hey, I might have time for cover and character sheet! Into Hero Machine (If I'd gotten to any credits, I'd have mentioned them, I feel bad about that), make part of a design, print screen into Paint and cut the pants. More Paint to draw tentacles and ink - there's no way I can do a whole squid or a person holding it. Cover layout done in Word - I have publisher but I'm not experienced with it and don't have time to learn.

4:30 Make the character sheet in Paint, it's sloppy even by my standards but it gets the idea across.

4:40 Crap! forgot to add in the charts! Decide to put them on separate pages to not mess with switches between 2 columns and 1.

4:45 Wait, how do I load this? Search for link in rules, figure it out send it off.

Later that night, see several things I missed

I love the color-coordinated powers idea. I just went with the "LIGHTNING BOLT PANTS ZAP PEWPEWPEW" angle. It's cool to see a different take of a similar idea.
