Stream of Consciousness RPG Challenge

I had a strange idea a few days ago... I thought of what it would be like to write a "Stream of Consciousness RPG." Generally, the idea is that you write an RPG - rules, setting, and character sheet - without any planning or editing, as it comes to you. It would be a variation of the 24 hour RPG challenge - but the results would be even rougher, and possibly even longer, than normal 24 hour RPG challenge material.

I suspect it would be very hard to judge such a challenge, if only because the resulting material would be so hard to sit down and read. Contradictions within rules and other errors would be a problem - but it could also be a judging tool.

Thoughts?

Like NaNoWriMo but for a game? So if you've written something you can't go back and change it?

I have a nasty habit of writing things in a "stream-of-conscious" method as it is...

I've probably been reading too much William S. Burroughs.

I enjoy stream of consciousness writing...when I'm writing fiction. It's not so good when writing for academia. I think it would be fun.

Well, the reason why it came up is because I was thinking about entering the next 24 hour challenge and thinking about how I would approach it. I thought that maybe I would just write the game in a stream of consciousness (aka SoC) and then go back to edit after the fact. Then I thought about it a little more and realized that SoC writing could be the challenge in itself - in which case you would not go back and edit.

What an interesting idea! I've been trying to write an Icar novel in a beat-writing stream of consciousness.

The only thing that bothers me is that the final product might not be coherent enough to play. You would have spent all that time and effort to create a game that is unplayable.

I'm necro-ing this thread, because I think it's awesome, and should be done. Who else is on board?

I'm all for it. Of course, this is how I do all my compo entries; my Game Chef quartet was all done in 24 hours less in terms of timeframe on each game without any real substantial editing, and Tale of Narvi was super duper no-editing.

Well, then, I'll be competing against veterans, I guess. I look forward to the challenge!
