That's really interesting. There's this anime series called "Heroic Age" that for all it's goofyness had a few interesting ideas. The main one was humans (Tribe of Iron) lost Earth in battle to the Tribe of Bronze and Tribe of Silver. The show is all about the rise of the Tribe of Iron so Earth is retaken. In retribution they go after the other tribe's home worlds. The best part is that the other tribes left their home worlds voluntarily ages ago. They're watching the humans and saying "why are they invading these dead planets?"

Rob is from the tribe of silver!

Ah ha! One of the few.

No-one ever admits to English ancestry. How odd!

That thought occurred to me while I was writing the post. I kind of think that English mixed more than the Irish. In the US there is a tradition of Irish towns, Italian towns, and German towns in cities where the immigrants from the various locales clustered together. I think that kept the cultures of the old country alive and caused generations of people to keep marrying into their traditional gene pool. That way they could easily still say "I'm an Italian American" four generations later. WWI and II may have helped that or hindered it I'm not sure.

The descendants of the English didn't really have that and so mixed in with the rest. I know one elderly gent that can boast of being 1/4 English.

I think it's because Ireland had a mass emigration, as did Germany. However, England didn't - neither did Wales. Oddly, neither did Scotland but I know Americans who can tell you what their clan tartan is!

I think it's because the USA were at war with the English - it was the great victory. No-one wants to admit they're descended from the enemy. We had the same over here around WW1, the Royal family changed their name (because they were German) to Windsor (a small town that has a Royal residence).
