Fleet Setting Published!

Postby Rob Lang » Mon Jan 18, 2016 5:23 pm

It's been a long road but I am finally there. The Fleet Setting, Troopers, guns, Droids, cruisers, Typhon, the whole shebang it's up now on DriveThruRPG.

I'm very proud that I got it finished. I wish I could spend thousands more hours on it but that just isn't possible. I got out what I wanted and that will need to be good enough.

What's next? Cup of tea and a sit down and then I'm coming back here to discuss what I should do.

Thank you for all your support and feedback over the years. What's next? We'll see.

Well done mate. I'm glad to hear you're still working on Icar and putting stuff out. I can't wait to read this when i get to a higher bandwidth connection.

Wait the blurb said I can call in orbital bombardments.......

Sounds like my kind of drug. MAYHEM!

This quote is from Destiny . . . during a mission called the S.A.B.R.E. Strike.

- setup you are infiltrating a hardened War-Mind base controlled by Rasputin the last of the AI War-minds,
helping to protect earth from the minions of the darkness with the use of his War Sats.
- you shoot a vent and toss a grenade down to overload the system and thereby open a path to the next area . . .
- YOUR Ghost ( a little AI companion that looks like a bit/byte from Tron) randomly says things at this point this is
on of my favorites from this specific strike . . . (Voiced by Nolan North)

Ghost- "oh yes hes mad oh oh Ya ok he just threatened us with orbital death from above"

my other fav (happens towards the end before the boss fight.)

Ghost - "as a fellow inorganic life form I would just like to point out that Rasputin has a much better setup than I do. He has a secret bunker and space weapons....I live in your backpack".

Thought of all this when seeing the quote about Orbital Bombardment . . .
side question do settlements have Ion Cannons, Heavy Mass Guns or the like to help
protect from orbital death from above?

Downloaded and reading! I was almost late to work because drive thru has such a wonky site that it took me forever to check out.

Have downloaded and read it. In a way I'm kinda of :( Rob. I was kinda looking and hoping that there could be a Fleet/Scav crossover.

But when I read it, something my GM said long ago almost could come true. If the Droids could be defeated or ala Battlestar Galactica where the Cylons a treaty. Human kinda has created a 2nd group of Superhuman "Gods" in the Fleet, what do you do if they go rogue? There do not appear to be any normal humans in a Fleet ship or support arms, or did I miss that.

YES! Expeditionary is the name given to scavengers who go across the Light Jump Net into Droid space for those things that are of very high net worth. Would it help if I blogged in detail about that? I ran a long campaign and have a half-written setting about it.

There are plenty of humans in the Fleet. Troopers and Stub Wing pilots must be bionic but everyone else is optional. I still think your GM is right - there is nothing stopping the Fleet going rogue, even if they are all human. There are a few things stopping them.

The technology used by the Fleet is greater than the rest of humanity but no so great. A large human army equipped with pulse lasers (Photoscythe, Igniter etc) and assault canons (Korg 5, Papex) would make short work of the Troopers. If you run the numbers, you'll see that a Trooper unit (50 troopers) won't do well against a human/bionic army of 1000 or more.

What the Fleet has become is effective at fighting the Droids. The technology, the tactics and understanding of strategy and tactics is key. Droids are predictable and they are lack supply lines - drawing only from the resources at hand. Fighting sneaky humans is another prospect altogether and there are many, many more humans than members of the Fleet.

I've just noticed that the history pages are missing from the website. I have no idea why, I'll check that tonight.

Finally, it's happened before. The Aran war was waged for 15,000 years and began as a battle of ideals against a corrupt Empire. What fuelled it was that the Fleet split in half. Half went rogue (or freedom fighters, depending on your point of view) and fought the other half. Although the war finished 10,000 years ago, fear of it happening again is ingrained in the human psyche. That is why the Imperium does everything it can to remain benevolent. It's well argued that a corrupt Empire would never have stood up against the Droids.
