Alternative to police tasers. I'm going to use this stuff because my game has a bit of an anarchist bent. People are going to want to arm themselves, but human beings have a natural psychological resistance to killing each other, so traditional firearms are out. I heard a statistic somewhere, (might be made up, haven't checked it yet) that people who own guns are more likely to be shot with them than they are to defend themselves with them. It makes sense if it is true because unless you are a psychopath or trained (brainwashed) soldier, you are hesitant to shoot another human.
But what if you could find the parts to make a directional speaker in most any junk yard or electronics store, and then you modulated to a frequency that makes people dizzy, or knocks them out. And then shaped it like a pistol or rifle.
Here are a couple of links to the tech.
Actually, this doesn't look like it would be tremendously hard to build today, never mind in a sci-fi world.
I just ran into this mightily atmospheric French animated short: . Gotta hand it to those Frenchies, they sure know how to do things with style. Matrix ain't got nothin' on this baby.
A short story I wrote and placed on Smashwords a while back. A combined experiment in self-publishing, writing, and sci-fi/cyberpunk literature. Still need to finish the cover page for it. But I figured it might get some people in the cyberpunk mood. Can't say if it's good or not to anyone, since I wrote it and think it's pretty cool.
