Improvised Magic Systems?

Postby modred11 » Mon May 30, 2011 8:47 pm

Hey I'm working on coming up with an Improvised Magic System, like a system where you'd combine "Magic Words" in any way you want to create any kind of effect, and I know I've seen systems like this before, but I'm coming up completely blank, does anyone know of any such systems? Preferably in Free RPGs cause they're easier to get access to.

I know has something like what I'm thinking of, but it's smaller than what I had in mind

TV Tropes is Aristotle's "Poetics" for the digital age.

is still free and contains the Latin Verb/Noun system that is quite flexible, and even inspired White Wolf to write Mage. I'll bet this is exactly the kind of thing you're looking for. An rpg.net summarizes it nicely.

In turn, Mage might have been an inspiartion for two urban fantasy games in 1km1kt.net's archive: " and ""

Take a look at "". Not necessarily improvised, but it does include both magic inscriptions, and the idea of combining them.
Games of imagination are never truly done. Yet tomorrow we shall start another one.

Thank you Chainsaw, I've gone over those and they've been very helpful!

Thanks! That's an interesting system.

Ars Magica is exactly what I was looking for, I think I've gotten a reasonable idea of what I want to do now
