Moldvay Basic, in the year it came out, whenever it was.

I suppose if I could wish for a different game to start with it would have been the first version of D&D, but I was 3 at the time so I'll let myself off.

My brother and I played the Heroquest board game endlessly. We evolved that into a naive home made RPG without realising what we'd done.

I got into playing RPGs properly with D&D and James Bond.

Ah… nostalgia ain’t what it used to be.

Yup, D&D basic – 2 books in a red box, as described by madunkieg above. And, a bit later on, Lord of the Rings RPG, similarly packaged as 2 books in a red box. Games Workshop republished it in the UK a few years later.

I taught myself to read – long story, rough school – using LotR & game books such as ‘Starship Traveller’ & ‘Deathtrap Dungeon’, scrawling my hit points in the margins & cheating outrageously whenever I died unexpectedly.

My first solo D&D game – I was 8 or 9 or 11, I’m not sure – saw my Thief imprisoned by Giant Spiders spinning webs over each of four exits of the treasure room. I still game with the guy who ran that scenario now.

The game in which I’ve always wanted to be a player – I’ve run it a bit – is Mage: The Ascension. I’m a sucker for that 90s New Wave stuff.
Suffers the burden of his genes.

There's a digital reconstruction floating around on the net somewhere.

CyberGeneration.

I started with that, went on to Cyberpunk and then Shadowrun and have played some variant of them along the way now since forever.

People get all nostalgic over D&D and I don't get it because it's not my experience at all.
I also do which isn't much, but it's enough for me.

My first RPG experience was playing through some 'Fighting Fantasy' books with a friend...we made the decisions together, but beefed up the stats on all the monsters so it wouldn't be too easy.

I then found the "Dragon Warriors" RPG in the mid 1980s, thinking it was the same sort of thing...only to discover "real" roleplaying games.

The first experience of truly immersive roleplaying came from systemless "Aussie-style" freeform live action roleplaying.
