Wtf?

Postby Guestapo » Fri Oct 12, 2007 3:46 am

I DONT understand this genre...

How do these games work?
I've played so many games before, except MUDS, MUDS and this genre aswell as some of these Role Play things... are the only genres I havn't learnt the defintion of.
I've played one or two crappy text based games before... oh god... no

Do you play against yourself in... that acrobat pdf thingy? Sounds... weird?
Is it pure luck??? seems to be LARGELY influenced by luck... :(
Is this one of these crappy imagination-roleplay games, where you write alot at your turn and basically describe everything and spend alot of time writing? and reading other players writing... I dont think it is.... but I'm soool confused.....

How does this all work

No, I have not downloaded the zip. Either I get told what this genre is first, or I won't give it a try.
Sell it to me plz :p

Defining an RPG

Postby Chainsaw Aardvark » Fri Oct 12, 2007 12:08 pm

Role Playing Games are a bit like improvisational acting or collective storytelling.

Generally, a group of friends sit around the table. One player acts as the game master -referee/director - setting the scene and devising the challenges. The others are the actors in the play. Their characters have codified skills and abilities to help set the limits of what they can and can't do in the imaginary world.

is an explanation by several of the denizens of both this site and its sister - RPGlaboratory where we work on developing these games.

This site is not for online play, nor for the console games like Final Fantasy. If you've ever heard of "Dungeons and Dragons" or "Vampire the Masquerade" then you're aware of some of the more prevalent professionally published games.

If you have any other questions, I'll be glad to answer. Another site to check out for information is - specifically the first listed in the types section – “Narrative or table top RPGs”.

Don't listen, he's lying!

To get the games to work you need to go to the system folder, find the dll that's icon looks like a teddy bear, and then delete it.

Don't let these people here tell you anything different. Their all crazy and are trying to stop you from playing what they consider their games.

I'm kidding. Chainsaw Aardvark is right, but I want to add something. If you've seen Vampire: The Masquerade or Dungeons and Dragons, don't be put off by the ridiculous complexity and stupid settings they have. Many games on this website are simple enough that you can simulate play in your head, and many are built so that you can create a setting for them very easily.

In a computer game or MMPORPG, the computer program shows you where you are, and what happens when you try and do things.

In 'Choose Your Own Adventure' type books, the book tells you where you are and what happens.

In these kind of RPGs ie 'pen-and-paper' or 'table-top' role-playing games, one player (the GM) tells you where you are and what happens.

The rules files that you download are to give some structure to what the GM tells you.

For example if you say "I try and kill the monster", instead of the GM making up what happens, there will usually be instructions as to how to work out what happens - usually involving a certain amount of random dice rolls, and a certain amount of predictability - eg warriors might always be better at killing monsters than thieves.

a free, online role-playing game.
