No comment section is the way to go. The focus of the site could be on the aforementioned cartoon and an extensive FAQ section. There could even be a questionnaire that helps new players to find the right game for them. Perhaps a history section could be interesting, too. Basically everything that helps total newbies to "get" roleplaying and the community helps.
This sounds like a fascinating prospect… I work in training and education so I could help. We have a small group in Puerto Rico that tries to promote RPGs and have tried teaching a couple of people but is mostly composed of hardcore games, lapsed gamers who have gotten back on track through us and casual gamers. Getting more people to play is definitely one of our goals.
Sunglar, welcome! Good to have another Stargazer blogger (and fan of free RPGs) on 1km1kt! All help will be welcome - especially when we start planning the cartoon (which I think will be the centre of the project). I think we should aim for an English site to start with and if the project seems to work well then we can get it translated.
Please keep an eye on this thread - or I'll be tweeting about it a lot no doubt.
I have nothing to add more than it sounds like a great idea, and I'll be happy to participate when translation is requested (it's always feels more welcoming when a site speaks to you in your native language - binary droid protocol in my case).
I think this is an excellent idea. It can be difficult to break into this hobby. The problem is that almost every group roleplays differently. I would concentrate on getting the basics across; with cartoons, videos, hyperlinked FAQs and all sorts of interactive media. Get them interested and using various forms helps to reinforce the message.
Here's another thought. I'd be willing to donate to this project. If Rob puts up a link to donate say on paypal or whatever the preferred method of donation would be I'll donate lets say $20 (12 pounds). How many members are there here (I really don't know). If there were 100 $20 donations that would be $2000 (1239 pounds). That would be enough to get a website, some camera equipment, some software and pay for a little bit of someone's time to do some web design (okay actually that wouldn't be enough for the web design, but it's a start).
I'm also willing to donate work to the project if desired.
To start off, we really don't need dedicated servers. Especially if the video is hosted on youtube. The rest is just a blog and some cross-linked webpages so the bandwidth demands would be relatively low. The domain and space on a co-hosted server costs something like $30 a year. If the site became a run away smash hit thats when you upgrade the servers.
