The 1KM1KT Minecraft Thread

Postby Rob Lang » Thu Aug 16, 2012 6:11 am

I'm sure there are others out there with a Minecraft problem. It can't just be me, Misterecho and Chainsaw Aardvark. Go on, raise your hands and then show us your projects.

Me and a few chums (including MisterE) have a little server that's been going since November 2010. There's loads on it now but the core of it looks like this:

Some might recognise Cloudship Atlantis:

I am currently working on building a village right in the middle of the map. My ultimate goal is to light and build on everything inside the Ring wall. Our builds are a mix of crafted only and extreme use of the /give command. The wall is about 1/8th crafted, everything but the balloons on Cloudship Atlantis is crafted. We only use editor programs to remove the huge linear errors generated by changes in the world generation algorithm.

Your turn! What ya buildin'?

It will probably be a while before I can post some pictures, since I lose myself in minecraft. I play in single player, and never turn off monsters - I take pride in the fact that every great structure I make is in spite of the oncoming night and the creatures that roam. Every project tends to morph into another, as any great task starts with the great task of acquiring resources, or making a base camp.

Cave exploration draws me more than trying to recreate a full sized city or airship - and I have been in some very impressive canyons and underground mazes. I found a stronghold that is adjacent to a canyon and over a very large and open canyon system. Many of the halls go in circles, and there are stairs leading nowhere - making it less an abandoned fortress, and more a low-resolution, underground .

As to what I've built - each world I start tends to end up with a bit of a different theme as I try to stay in harmony with the area around me. It is quite unlikely that I will dig away an entire mountain to make room for a mega project - that much digging is boring, and will take quite a while if dodging creatures, and destroys the natural majesty of the land. I tend to make lots of tiny cabins and big observation towers to see around me.

Notable projects include a clipper ship, several branch mines, a model Japanese castle, an automatic what farm, a church modeled on a cathedral with flying buttresses, and a few split-level houses. There is also a farm with underground passages connecting the house, barn, store room, cave system, watch tower, and nether portal. Oh, and I can't forget the spiral light house, and the split-level cave house or the other tiny castle, complete with hidden escape route from the dungeon.

At some point I'm going to build an ersatz airport in the desert, tun my minimal river crossings into model cable-stay bridges, construct that giant cobra head crying lava to fufill my need for a base of operations worthy of an overlord. Just as soon as I finish exploring that canyon to get the resources to build the railway that connects everything to the other territory I want to explore and expand the farm and...

Yeah, the game I play when I'm not making games is as far behind as the ones I'm supposed to be writing.
Games of imagination are never truly done. Yet tomorrow we shall start another one.

my new RPG blog.

If I started playing Minecraft, you'd find my body slumped over my keyboard with a shotgun slug hole through my head and monitor. The number one murder suspect? My wife.

Do I believe this would happen? Yes I do.

The Mrs. wouldn't go near an Xbox. The most advanced console game I could get her to play would be Super Mario Bros on NES. And probably for 10 minutes a year at that.

I'm looking for a sturdy enough hat.

My 11 year old is pretty addicted to it. He also watches youtube vids of two British guys playing the game. My 17 year old has "been there, done that." I confess I've never played it myself, but I've watched them play a bit.

It's fascinating to me how much current pop culture seems to have origins in old-school rpgs.
