Having always been a fan of Earthsea, I was pleased to see this in my wanderings

Interesting... it sure does look Purty. How faithful does it look to be of the book? I am not familiar with earthsea- wanna give me a quick synopsis?

Sci Fi has done a good job with Battlestar Galactica by all accounts- this might be another winner.

Yeh, Battlestar is pretty good from what I've seen so far.

Earthsea - it was a favourite from donkeys years ago when I was a mere youngster. Can't remember masses about it, but I've just picked up a copy, so I'm gonna read it again. Isn't there a synopsis on the movie site?

Earthsea's a well written series. It was written as adolescent fiction but it's certainly transcends "children's stories." I've read the firs t and third book and currently reading the second book, Tombs of Atuan. Which is by far the darkest of all three. These books are better then the Chronicles of Narnia and better the the early, comical, Dragonlance books. I believe there was a post on Open Rpg recently that some one wanted to run a Earthsea Champaign. What children's book, or fantasy for that matter, has narcotic addiction in it's society?

just my 1d6 cents,

Sci Fi version

Postby dindenver » Sat Dec 24, 2005 2:46 pm

Hi!
I love the books, they are one of my all-time favorites!
The Sci Fi version is not very faithful and tries to squeeze all three books into one mini-series. They changed some of the story events and details in order to streamline it for the new format.
I was disappointed, but I have a pretty high standard for these sorts of things (I was happy with the first harry potter but disappointed by the Prizoner of Azkaban).

A few more thoughts on Earthsea, the novels and the miniseries.

1. The magic system: I mentioned that the "true names" of objects is used widely. Most of the time, the young magician must learn these true names on their own. It occurred to me that this sounds like the magic of the Native Americans.

2. I agree that the series made short work of the novels. The "spirit" that chases or haunts Ged appears to be more undead than ghostly.

3. You all must read Tombs of Atuan a.s.a.p!!

I have read all of them. They are great but be warned for those out there that enjoy Tolkien. The Earthsea books are not your typical fantasy in setting or tone

You'll want to check the ribs every 20 minutes or so. Examine them to see if the surface of the meat looks dry or moist. Ribs "sweat" about three times during the smoking process. The pores of the meat open, and this allows moisture to escape.MONEY-RUNESCAPE.com sell This is when the seasoning from the dry rub and the smoke itself are reabsorbed into the meat. When they're sweating, mop or mist them with some apple juice and sprinkle them with a little more Magic Dust. Opening the lid will lower the temperature; add more coals and wood chips as needed to maintain the temperature.
