was my entry to the 24 hour RPG competition last year. For a year it's languished on my hard drive. Mostly because of the birth of my son, who halted my roleplaying efforts overnight. When I restarted weekly roleplay, I was given the chance to playtest CA. There were some balance issues, which I then tested in a later session (last Tuesday). It's going really well.
The system uses a pool of dice that all the players share. For simple actions, they don't need a dice - just a description but when a character tries something outrageous and the target number is larger than Attribute + Skill then they take a dice, roll it and maybe take another if need be. The system worked better once the players were used to it (and the target numbers were rescaled).
What seemed to go down really well was the setting. The book had just enough detail in it to describe the cut-throat world of the Gentry above the bow line and I found it easy to expand upon.
However, the quandry is that now I've played it - I want to update it. I want to improve the graphics, expand the setting, add a GM section and all the other things I didn't get time to. I shouldn't touch it - not even open the design file - until Icar version 4 is done. It is the pasture green over the fence. It is the shiney new sportscar, not the lumbering old jalopy. I could open it and do just a bit but I know me: I'll get my head down and write hundreds of pages of it.
So, I must be strong - and part of the strength I'm trying to muster will be driven by this post. By telling everyone that by updating Cloudship Atlantis before Icar is ready is naughty and I must be chastised.
(Part of me wants to update it just to wind up MrE, it must be said)
