I have my own collection of "retired" game design in boxes and notebooks. My wife says its junk, but I still have the nagging feeling I will go back over them "later" and either laugh at myself or find a nugget of gold...or another kind of nugget!

The main thing is do not quit. If you are truly passionate about game design then the quest to your goal(s) is as important as the end result.

One thing I've noticed that helps me write is setting deadlines. It doesn't increase quality, but it gets a full game out. For instance, at the rate I worked on it over most of my summer break, Orchestra would have finished by some time in December, if you're optimistic, and that's still first draft. With a deadline and some mind.in.a.box, however, I was able to write about 30 pages in a week, while preparing to move into a dorm.

I write frequent on game development, storytelling, or life in general, in case you want to follow what I'm up to.
