I'm thinking about my next project, and I'm thinking about writing an RPG based on a popular 8-bit platform jumping game from the 80's. Begins with "Super" end's with "Bros." I'm going to design it to emulate the feel of the video game as closely as possible... yet still make it a playable RPG. Has anyone else ever done something like this before?
I once started to write a tabletop arcade game, it wasn't an RPG, but a beast of its own. Sadly, I never finished. I should pick up my notes again (if I find them).
The only thing that jumps to mind (haw haw) is to ensure the mechanics feel like the act of playing a platformer. Not easy, I know but then that's the challenge. There needs to be some skill involved in succeeding to the next platform - rather than simply rolling a die.
yes and no, what you have there seems to be more a board game mechanic. Its still useable but be careful of having to many rules this... tactically minded. The can bog down a game and make it less role playing and more Roll playing...
