Dvorak's Inferno

Postby Thought » Fri Jan 06, 2012 4:28 pm

I have to complete my (2 years late), and Dr. Mr. The Lang that not working on projects in a vacuum can help maintain motivation. In short, blame him, not me, for this thread.

The project is actually moving along well. A complete draft of the core is almost done: all that is needed is for me to flesh out the descriptions of a few attributes. This isn't including fluffy setting information (that is well along, but needs a maniac with a chainsaw to cut it down to a manageable size), graphics (which I haven't started on), a character sheet, or fancy things like non-times new roman font. Still, this does mean that it is currently possible to pick up the game and actually play it. it just might be more confusing than is necessary right now.

After getting the core draft done (sans graphics and setting), I'll see about uploading it somewhere (any suggestions?). I'm hopeful that this will be in the next week or two.

Sorry I keep reading the title of the thread and hearing "Burn baby burn, Disco inferno, burn baby burn"

Nice! Although I suppose when trying to get people to play a game, making them think of disco might not be the best strategy. Still, I like it far better than the original title (CyberSins).

Here's a random question for any readers: would an in-character commentator be disruptive if they were commenting on the rules as you read them?

Essentially, since the game's a bit light on graphics, I have been thinking about using in-character floating textboxes to try to break up things up. Specifically, since it is possible in-game for someone to accidentally "download" malware into their mind while they're would tromping through Virtual Reality, I was thinking about having one such program exist in the "author's" mind and insert commentary into the text without the "author" realizing it. Does that make any sense? Does it sound like an annoyance or something that might be fun?

I recall from a review that the various editions of "Cartoon Action Hour" had characters helping out with creation and commenting on rules. The old Marvel Superhero game did as well.
Games of imagination are never truly done. Yet tomorrow we shall start another one.

Welp, it's a draft, at least, though it is missing a character sheet, images, boarders, supplemental commentary throughout, extended examples, a complete setting, a few lists, and a coherent organizational structure (I added fancy-to-do's before the text was finalized: its difficult to rearrange things, so I haven't done that yet). This "last little bit" is taking a lot more work than I had expected. Anywho, I said I'd release something today, so since it isn't actually complete yet, I guess I'll go with a sample of some of the more-finished parts.

Since I'm still looking for a good place to post the game, for now I'll just be bargain-basementy and go with google docs: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8nIls ... NhNWM2ZDlm

Hopefully a full draft will be available soon. Let's say another two weeks...

Not sure if I'll hit a meaningful Friday update, but things are progressing nicely nonetheless. As I think I've noted, in the game a character's vices and virtues can help them out in a situation. I finally managed to wrestle that section to the mat. In particular, creating a significant difference between Envy and Greed was difficult, as was defining Kindness in a usable way.

The only critical section left is the character classes (called "cliques"). Which is why instead I've been working on the Items and Equipment section.

Of course, even when I finish cliques, there is still the entire background section that needs to get revamped and expanded, a bestiary to create, and then pictures and formatting to care about. Then I can start on a GM specific section.
