One more on RPG Lab that I'd say needs to be mentioned is Adventuria Online by ErrinF. It was one of the most impressive solo games that I've seen or had the pleasure of playing.
As for whether it is popular or not, I tend to play them quite a bit. They are good for a minor diversion from multiplayer games and work well when you've got nobody else around.
And Mr. Aardvark, I'm flattered that you remembered the game, It's a nice ego booster.
Ah, CA, ever the encyclopaedic knowledge of the archive! What would we do without you?
Misterecho, I can't say I'm so keen with solo RPGs. If I want to run through a story, I'd probably fire up the old computer. It's the joint imaginations of friends that keep RPGs alive for me.
I was just persuing a little research into the field of RPGs in general. I was interested in Read your own adventures as a kid. I was looking into the evolution of them. I'm interested in finding out how members here like to experience the RPG genre. I'm thinking I might do a little piece on Solo-ing for my blog.
Five posts on solo gaming and not one 'playing with yourself' joke. I'm impressed, gentlemen.
One of the end goals of my GM's helper project is solo gaming. That aspect is more a salve for isolated Midianites than a proper roleplaying system in its own right.
How do solo RPGs differ from their main counterparts? Are they like Choose Your Own adventure? Is there animball-esque random generation? Disco soup/MrE have both piqued my interest!
Go to boardgamegeek. This is a link to the Doctor Who Solo game. It plays like a CYOA book but with dice rolls. You need the Rules Booklet, Adventure Booklet, Events Booklet and Enemies Booklet, all of which are free.
If the rules seem a bit much to learn all at once, go to projectaon.org. There you can play the Lone Wolf Series free, which is similar to a solo RPG.
My goal is to make something very open-ended, like the Doctor Who game, with many options for character advancement, like Adventuria or Haunted House.
Also, there is Star Smuggler and Barbarian Prince. I'm not a real fan of fantasy, so that's one reason why I'm making my own games, as the majority are fantasy. I study the game rules and will adapt the concepts I like best.
