Heinlein

Postby Torycartel » Tue Mar 30, 2004 6:59 pm

Robert Heinlein: Writer
What are Heinlein's "Rules for Writing?"

These oft-quoted and -referenced rules appeared in the 1947 essay "On the Writing of Speculative Fiction." They are, for the most part, as germane today as they were then.

Heinlein's Rules for Writing
You must write.
You must finish what you write.
You must refrain from rewriting, except to editorial order.
You must put the work on the market.
You must keep the work on the market until it is sold.
I bring this mans name up here, because to me, he was the master of Sci-Fi...My favorite book of his ..Stranger In A Starnge Land.......a masterpiece among all books, all authors, I remember, when I first read it, I was awestruck by its diverse meanings....I applaud you......

If you're looking for a little more detailed advice, orson scott card wrote "How to write science fiction and fantasy".. it's a tiny little book, but with a great deal of useful information.

For me, I have to list Dune and Ender's Game as my favorite all time Sci-Fi reads. Hands down. I've never read anything by Heinlein, but I'll put Stranger in a Strange Land at the top of my reading list. Thanks Tory!

I've personally never managed to finish Stranger in a Strange Land; however, I've always loved Starship Troopers (which was also a great Bookcase wargame by Avalon Hill (I think)).

Frank Herbert is absolutely one of the best... better than Heinlein in my opinion. I do dig Starship Troopers if only for the military side of the SF genre- but man, Herbert could write the hell out of a book.

I especially like God Emporer of Dune. That is an amazingly underappreciated book that discusses some very challenging political topics and touches on the nature of good vs. evil. Herbert places it all in a very nifty SF setting and adds some compellign character- shakes well- and ends up with a great book.

I haven't really hit anything in more recent authors that even come close- thought Chine Mieville is on my short list of cool stuff to read and I heard he has a skill in the English language quite above the norm.

Have you ever read Sin CIty by Frank Miller? It's one of the few graphic novels I've read. I just recently borrowed The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen GN from a friend, and I like it so far. I'd like some other recommendations if anyone has any.

I agree with all of you on these authors. Ender's Game is a great book. I also like Starship Troopers but Stranger in a Strange Land is definitely a fantastic book. I have never read any of Frank Herbert's work, but if Chris likes him then he must be good.

Sin City is being made into a movie... rumored to have Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Willis, Elijah Wood, Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, Kate Bosworth and Jaime King. Directed by Robert Rodriguez.

We'll see
