Submission: Out of Frame

For Rob Lang's current group challenge, I submitted . Not my first 24-hour game; I've got a couple others here, one for a challenge to make a 24-hour solitaire RPG, three for 24 challenges issued over on The Forge. Mechanically, this one is probably the closest to what I want.

I started this one at 2pm on Sunday, when my housemates took a day trip. Couldn't work while they were home, because their four-year-old and toddler both are so fascinated with me, I can't get anything done. Had to take a break around 8pm when they got home, but got back to work after 10:30pm when they went to bed. Worked all the way through about 4:30am, then got some sleep. Woke up at 8:30am, kept the door closed and pretended I was still asleep so I could finish up.

The layout is messed up, especially for the character sheet, which I just threw together instead of working out where to put things. Characters for OOF are pretty simple, so there's not much else to add to the sheet, but I might want to position labels better and rearrange things to make room for a rules summary. The main text appears to have extremely wide margins because I planned to include marginalia, but didn't have time to finish it. I plan on summarizing rules on each page in the marginalia to make them easy to find.

I'm also missing a lot of examples that I just didn't have time to finish.

talysman, that sounds like quite a struggle! The sense of achievement, for all its flaws must be great, though.

Do you still get a thrill from doing a 24 hour RPG, even though you've done a few?

@tygertyger: Thanks! Much as I like the movie, "The Purple Rose of Cairo" is only required viewing if the players have seen "Dark City". The first few scenes of "Dark City" are roughly what I was going for, but the feel I'm shooting for is more like Purple Rose. Or maybe Heinlein's "Job: A Comedy of Justice".

@Rob: Yes, I do get a feeling of accomplishment. It's not so much the time limit as the challenge of finding inspiration from random sources outside my control. I participated in several "Game Chefs" as well; in fact, I just finished one about a month before I did OoF. It's fun, gives me a chance to refine my ideas, and a couple times produced game concepts I feel really excited about. Thanks for hosting this contest!
