Well now, third place. I'm surprised and pleased, considering that I knew when I posted MoO how incomplete it was (if I'd had another 24 hours, now...). Thanks to all the judges for their recognition!

Thanks Jeff for going into it. As I said it's not the end of the world for me, but it is always a bit disappointing to see my RPG on the bottom of anyone's list, even if it isn't official. But in exchange I know about some important problems in my RPG that I wasn't aware at all. I think some time I'm going to make a cleaned up version of Lemmings, that maybe called Tribes. :)

And I agree with Errin that the real prize of this contest are the computer RPGs themselves and they are available for everyone.

OFF:

I'm also starting to regret that I began in first place to use the original order of my name. So, please call me Gabor because that is my real "first name". I just can't get used to anyone koszpering me. My fault. :)

Thank you for the feedback--Follow up Question

Postby commondialog » Thu Oct 05, 2006 8:50 am

I've got some mixed emotions right now. I would have liked to have finished higher, but at the same time I had a lot of fun writing it and I think it will only help me next time.

Jeff, thank you for taking the time to post your detailed feedback. I would say you were dead on with a lot of your comments.

If I might ask a follow up question to group, though. Please don't think I'm being argumentative, I just want to know for the next challenge.

You stated there was no artwork (and there wasn't.) I struggled with that a lot. The rules are VERY explicit about not putting in work for which I don't own the copyright. Since I am such a crap artist, I decided it was better that I include no artwork than to try to make my own. However, I did find some creative commons licensed artwork that would have worked fine. Could I have used that? I googled free artwork and found a lot of fantasy artwork (very little of it G rated, but that's another story) and if I write a fantasy game, I have a couple places to go, but for less popular things, is there a type of license which would allow me to include the artwork in my game?

Thanks a lot and congratulations to the top 3 placers.

First, "commondialog" is Chris, author of "Q*Bert" right?

(If not this whole response is not going to make any sense.)

Chris,

Yes you could use the creative commons art... I made Gothic Worlds with art that was offered by a company in exchange for an advertisement... the idea is the resource should be equally open and accessible to anyone who might compete and not be illegal for you to use. If you can find it on the internet. If the license is free and anyone can get at it... use away! I was worried about the "Sonic Game" ... but I found out in working on "Phantasy Star Online" that Team Sega does offer an open license for web designers and the like that allows the use of resources in the promotion of their games... Anyway if the licence is free and open to anyone I say the art is perfectly legal for use in your 24 Hour RPG. Either that or art created yourself during the 24 Hour period or recycled from another project... (Oh... and it can't be something you spend money on during the challenge ... I got burned once for buying art for my challenge - LOL!)

I know this question is just about future endevours but I wanted to address current concerns. When Keeton asked if he could post the opinions that I included with my scores he asked if I wanted to stay annonymous... and I was like, "heck no!" I am just a gamer guy like you. I am no different. I have my opinions and some may be good and some may be not so good... but I am always open to discussion and debate about them... I don't find that argumentative... I think discussion of ideas is the only way any of us learn anything... and I love to learn.

You said you had mixed feelings... and then asked about graphics. I'm curious about that because in my case with this submission graphics weren't an issue. There was a mention that the design was graphic free in the score notes... but it didn't count against you ... just so you know ... Your layout was great! I scored it a 9! Your game was great! And really funny and a joy to read!! But, I honestly thought it was meant to be just a read... not something someone would ever really play... it seemed so tongue in cheek and the card pyramid thing seemed really complicated and more in the spirit of the "joke" than in creating a way to introduce Q*Bert players to the tabletop RPG experience... that's why you lost points with me... I didn't think it was a game people would play... but I loved reading it. I found it funny and entertaining and if you have mixed feelings about that feel free to discuss it here... that's not argumentative... that's just good forum discussion!
