Micro progress report

Postby Rob Lang » Mon Jul 05, 2010 4:50 am

So, I've been hacking away at the 3D models for the next version of the equipment index and that seems to be going rather well. I know I only throw out one or two a week but they do take a long time to do (the Vulture took about 10 hours, the most recent Sports V about 4). As you can see, it very much depends on the model. I am getting much much quicker than before, when I originally made these models!

The next ones to do are Kestrel (the typical family van) - a model lost in the Great Model Loss Of Sometime In The Naughties, which shouldn't be too hard because I have loads of renders of the original and, to be honest, it was inspired by the VW camper, so I can definitely reproduce it.

The Orbihaul is a bit tricky because I know what I want it to do but have no idea what it should look like. I want a big cargo bay below and a living area on top but I think I want it more streamlined and interesting to look at. Going to need to do some sketches. Might take a bit longer.

The Eagle. I hate the model for the Eagle. Back when everything was pencil and paper, I drew the Eagle in perspective and it was rather good. I've not managed to reproduce it in 3D, so it's going to be something of a struggle when I come to do it. It needs to be somewhere between a grav car and space craft.

Maybe a stupid design idea, but how about mixing in some "blue print" sketches of some crafts? Just rough, line-art sketches, as if taken directly from the engineer's desk?

That's a cool idea, Groffa. It's not so much the images - they are easy to make. The problem is with all the statistics. I'd be almost reproducing what is included in the Equipment Index.

I suppose with the space craft, I could put them all on one page with just a couple of simple stats such as speed and cost.

Orbihaul,Rob I like the fact the one we have seen isn't streamlined to speak of, so that if it every loose power in atmosphere it will fly like a brick... It looks like cargohauler.

If I can humble throw an idea at you, look at a LCT5 or LCT6 style design but fulling enclosed

Using this style, I would just "flip the ship" so U have 2 clamshell style door that will open and then put a small living/working area on top

actually the WW II LCA already looks a good bit like the Orbithaul in the Ver3 Equipment book.
