Welcome Metropole Luxury Coffin

Postby madunkieg » Sun Jan 31, 2010 3:10 am

The racks of sleeping capsules make the hotel look like a vending machine for people. So what if the rooms are barely tall enough to sit up in? There's no place cheaper to sleep, not even on the street outside. Metropole Luxury Coffin capsule hotel is sanctuary for stranded businessmen, migratory urban workers, street tribes, and for now, you. Welcome home.

Image*

Featuring:
- a custom system, tuned to capture the spirit of cyberpunk
- the world of the beautiful downtown Metropole Luxury Coffin capsule hotel and the Datanet
- a dystopia to us may be utopia for a cyberpunk

The Cyber:
- it's not people's relationship with their machines, it's their relationship with their data
- everyone's got face, a reputation-linked interface with the datanet and the world
- data fog, the sheer quantity of data generated makes finding anything a greater challenge than data security
- banks don't hide your personal information, they promote it
- whatever can be done online is, whatever can't...is probably done at Metropole Luxury Coffin

The Punk:
- resistance against incompetent corporate authority
- urban tribalism
- net tribes, organized by interest, not locale
- the fracturing of subcultures into insanely specific niches
- a do-it-yourself approach to misusing consumer goods, "The street finds its own uses for things."

I hope there's an actual game mechanic around "insanely specific niches", because for the life of me, I really wanted to put something like that in my game, but I can't figure out how to do it yet.

So like if a PC meets and NPC and the player says, "My character is going to work some geekdom hints (like a famous line from a cult classic movie) into the conversation to see if he can bond with the NPC based on their mutual interest." I have no idea how do handle that mechanically. This is why my setting as yet doesn't have stuff like the Chocolate Rain meme or overlapping geekdoms, but I'd like to. I think it would be really trendy.

I also very much dig that you seem committed to your game being set in one location. Neuromancer meets 4 Rooms. By limiting the scope, you really focus on whats possible, the people who live there, the people who are just passing through, everything from slapstick to perverse. Tight.

You know if I could buy one of those, I probably would. Could you hear a baby screaming in it?

So is this essentially a virtual world all contained within the Hotel?

Sort of like a "Mini-Matrix"?

LOL

This reminds me of the voodoo youth hostel I stayed at when I first moved to New Orleans.

I think the Metropole Luxury Coffin should also have a lobby with gift and souvenir shops and an all-night bodega (small convenience grocery store). Because when the PCs are stoned out of their gourds at Oh-God-o'clock in the morning, stumbling into the lobby for munchies, there should be somewhere they can wander into the middle of a hold up.

And Keeton should be the maintenance / guest services guy who knows more than he is comfortable with about what people do in their cells.

If it's anything like my experiences, the ice machine is a dragon of sorts.

LOL, Sanglorian! Of course, I wasn't suggesting that you fill these with babies in some cruel ploy to exterminate a generation in a space saving way. I was suggesting putting me in it so that my 3am gurgling, giggling, wriggling lad doesn't wake me up just to say hello. :)

Meaning is a funny old thing.
