Hiya

Time I got my act together too!

I'm going for 'Doom and Cookies' although I don't think I'm being very original I like what came to mind.

As I'm new to this can I check a couple of rules points.

It'll be a little while before I can get a day free to actually do the work.
Is it ok to think about the game before I commit to paper as it is proving hard not to but working it out in my head is feeling like cheating!

Also, for layout and presentation, is it acceptable to surf and find clip art etc outside 'the day'
I'd assume not, but the high standard of the current entries makes me ask! :-)

Hi, the answer to question 1 is...technically your not suppose to plan anything till the day of....but having a good idea seem to be ok..... and as for #2 no all layout (art included) must be done by the end of the 24hr.......Good luck, can't wait to read your entry.

I'm quite sure that you can't search for artwork beforehand. That would at the very least count as planning, if not outright beginning work.

As to pre-thought, that is a thornier issue. As I stated in a prior post, the original wording of the challenge implies that you're supposed to do everything from brainstorming on within the 24 hours. However, the spirit is more focused on finally making something of an idea you had and finishing a game.

These are the kind of projects that end up in "development hell". I have at least 3 games from 2000/01 that I'm still working on (XenoExodous, Octal, and Gangland) so actually getting things done is an acheivement in and of itself.

Much like the "don't think of pink elephants" trick - once you have an idea, you will invaribly consider it.

The officail rules do say you can modify a system you used prior - though I would argue some modification (or at least re-typing) would be required.

If you have an idea for a theme, or a setting, or a mechainc - that might be excused. But if you have gone beyond the "big idea" phase and considered things like text layout, examples, art etc. you have gone way too far.

A pen shall not touch paper, nor photons upon thine screen impinged untill the ordanied period has beguns.

Since we have a pre-made list of topics/themes and a few constraints, some pre-thought is a certinty...

The one thing we can all agree on, is that this is a solo chalange, and the 24 hours are timed completly on the honor system. Go by what you feel is honest.

Having done one now, I would say that it is nearly impossible to NOT think a little prior to working on it. I mean if someone wanted to, they could claim that use of graphics found on line on one of the royalty free repositories is pre-planning or pre-24hr working on it (you didn't do it, but someone else did), but that is just nitpicking. Honestly, imo the contest is more about taking someone else's idea and spending 24 hours making it into as refined a product as you can. It is more about that fact that you participated and completed something workable, rather than nitpicking.

And Chainsaw had it right when he said "honor system." This is a gentleman's contest and you should just go with what you know is right and would expect of the others involved.

That freaking rocks!

Thanks guys, that makes a lot of sense.

Best plan is just to get down to it as soon as possible!

I'm certainly planning that whatever I come out with it will do the lion's share of building a game which will allow me to expand and work it into something publishable no matter how the 24 hour version goes.
