Astraripper 2e

Postby Rob Lang » Mon Jan 10, 2011 5:30 pm

The Astraripper 2 is a beloved weapon. It's been around since the beginning. It was one of the first 3D models I ever made. It's one of those guns most players like to get their hands on because it can allow a strong human to take out a Borg. It's an important piece of equipment, it has history. I made a model I was happy with 6 years ago (the one you can see in the current equipment index) but I lost the actual 3D model in a big hard drive balls up some time after. So I'm trying to remake the model for version 4. It's proving to be a bit sticky. I need to sleep on it. This is what I have so far.

(Colours are there so I can tell the different parts from each other).

It's missing a load (forward handle, barrel stays and the rest of the grip) and I will get it done but it's turning out to be a bit of a struggle. gah! Why can't the all be as easy as the Hellhound!

Its interesting (and great fun) to see the stylistic approach you are taking to all your excellent 3D work. Despite RPGs being a "product of your imagination", times are changing and peoples ability to visualize things isn't what it used to be..IMHO.

Art, has always been a huge factor in both the quality and the enjoyment of a setting for me. If a game has bad art I cant get past it...Wizards of the Coast knows this well...

When I look at your work it reminds me of 5th element immediately..especially the weapons.

It strikes me as:
Modular (simplicity in its construction)
Inexpensively built (very much how everything is done in ICAR, modular..mass produced..cheap to make)

I suppose I have to remember that maybe these arent textured? and that the baby mobile colors are not intentional? If they are, then perhaps it dosn't look as aggressive and as scary as I'd prefer... This gun looks like it squirts milk to me. lol...

Regardless, keep up the great work as this all adds mountains to the game and helps everyone to get on the same page as to what and how things look. I wish I had the patience and skill to do 3D..sadly I dont...(mostly the patence part, as Im busy playing eve-online and RIFT (soon)).

Done! At last...

This is the sniper version (with the sight). The standard version is like this but without the sight on top.

The 2e is the ideal weapon for someone who is augmented (Meat 8+ to fire and the Ammo weighs loads too). You want to make sure that you've got something heavy wrapped around you if someone points one of these at you. It's not the nastiest weapon, though. The Papex is the nastiest - even in the toned down (balanced) version 4 equipment index.

I LOVE IT ROB

One of the things that help convince me to give ICAR a try was the Art and Equipment Book!
