I'm going to run check what the Starship Troopers game used.

It was novel-sized with a border and columns, and it got 7-8 words (maybe 30 characters) per line. Not terribly optimal, so perhaps they should have merged the two columns, but it worked well enough for me to read through all the rules and such in one setting. Of course, it is d20 based, so there's nothing new under the sun as far as it's concerned.

Mind you, this is the pocket edition, and I can picture a moderately lazy graphic designer with little print experience copying the print layout but shrinking everything a good deal from the original full-size layout.

Yeah, the format I'm using takes A4 paper, puts it on it's side and folds it over. When you do it that way, it's like you're only giving the reader a single column.
I also do which isn't much, but it's enough for me.

This is a cool guide. I think authors tend to prefer more visual guides. I might condense your post and some of my usual feedback into a blog post.
