Hey Joe! Congrats on another published game. Readers may remember about Pile Drivers and Powerbombs.

So the questions remain:

What are you doing to make the leap from amateur to professional RPG author?

Are you self-publishing or are you being contacted?

Would you recommend the professional publishing route to others?

Inquiring minds want to know, and I'm not posting any more of your work until you share. ;)

Hi Keeton

Well I'd best respond here since I've got a late entry for the computer games RPG competition!

Well, I've technically been a pro-game designer for the last two months and to make that leap all I had to do was leave my job! I will soon hopefully be getting another job tho...

Pretty much everything I've learned I've got from . So, I've been going the indie, self publishing route. From what I know of the industry now, i think it's really the only rooute available to new designers, but with the recent advances in pdf and digital printing technology, it's now possible to turn a profit even without a huge (or any) advertising budget.

Here's what I've been up to
- Getting a website online, I've learnt (basic) webdesign, so I can point people to
- Putting out pdfs on RPGedge
- Attending cons and running games, I made it to Indy Gen Con this year and it was amazing. I met so many other designers doing the same thing as me. It was totally worth leaving my job for!
- Getting a short print run of Contenders done and getting it available through

As for recommending self publishing, it's a lot of work but it is do-able. I published Contenders totally on my own and it's been received really well. sales have not been as high as I'd hoped, but I have paid for the first print run. In contrast, going through a third party publisher for the pdf version of has been far less profitable, I have only just this week received any money from that. And there was the whole kerfuffle about having the pdf taken down from this site (I'm sure Andy K still thinks I'm not indie enough but my computer game RPG will change all that, oh yes).

So, go for it if you love your game but it is very tough to get any kind of recognition and even harder to generate lots of sales!

Cheers for asking
Joe

Hey Joe, have you sent in your "Computer RPG" yet? Your post has a lot of good information. Thanks for the tips... (maybe you could write a short piece for the articles section about getting started as a pro rpg publisher?

Hi Jeff

Alien Hominid the RPG is up on the site now!
for more info on the game, it's an awesome old school style sideways scrolling game, very much inspired by Metal Slug and Contra type games.

Sure, I'll try and write a short article, but first I'd like to have a go at the character sheet is the RPG challenge. I just printed out Rage, Precognition & Grace and thought it was ace! A micro dungeon crawl for newbies, very cool. I'm thinking of trying to compress my dungeon-bash-in-progress Labyrinths & Lycanthropes down to a page.

Oh and I need to judge a couple of games for the RevEng challenge too...

Cheers
Joe

The aroma of freshly aroused pussy was more than merely exciting, it was completely intoxicating as Winston’s nostrils flared while trying to inhale as much of the scent as possible!!! “Winston,” she said sweetly, “can you eat me through my panties, they’re so thin that I’m sure you can make me cum that way, don’t you!?!” His mother had always taught him not to talk when his mouth was full, and besides
