Rainbow Six

For some reason, I thought this might interest a few people on here.

John Woo Directing Paramount's Rainbow Six
Source: Variety
Thursday, June 3, 2004

------

John Woo (Paycheck) will direct Paramount's adaptation of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, featuring the shadowy John Clark CIA agent character, reports Variety.

The story centers on Clark joining with several colleagues to leave the CIA and create an England-based multinational org designed to battle terrorism.

Writers who have worked on the script since 1999 include Michael Shiffer, Bill Wisher, Art Monterastelli, Frank Capello and John Enbom, who was hired in March to script.

Paramount adapted Clancy's Jack Ryan character in The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears and acquired rights last year to Clancy's Red Rabbit, also centered on the Ryan character. It's also developing another Clancy thriller, Without Remorse, based around the John Clark character.

Upon first reading I thought "YES!", but then I remembered The Sum Of All Fears. Tom Clancy movies have never held true to the books. It's actually very disappointing. I am a huge Clancy fan and have read all of his fiction and nonfiction books to date. Hunt For Red October was decent and Patriot Games was probably the best movie adapted from his books. Clear and Present Danger totally missed the entire plot of the book. Sum Of All Fears had almost nothing to do with the book. It was a pathetic adaptation and barely a decent movie for those who had seen the movie without reading the book. Rainbow Six has the potential for being good, the story is well done, and Woo is directing, but with the history of Clancy movies I am not encouraged.

And speaking of bad adaptations... do not get me started on the new Harry Potter movie...

While I am happy of the fact that they are finally making a movie of Rainbow Six, it does make me cry that they have selected John Woo to be the director. He hasn't done a good movie since Face/Off and some will argue that it has been longer than that. I will definitly have to hear more about this before I know what to think.

I really, honestly think that John Woo was a great Hong Kong action film maker- but once he got critical acclaim and a real budget, he became really freakin' lazy. His ideas are sad and passe' and his action just doesn't keep the relentless, unapologetic, and raw feel to it.

America has made him soft.

Rainbow Six is about intense techno-thiller action. John Woo is not the guy I would tap to make sure the movie remains true to its roots (or has a reasonable expectation of success).

Rainbow Woo

Let me just say Mission Impossible 2 --- 'nuf said. That was the worst movie in the entire history of bad movies so it is disappointing that they picked Woo for Six.

Maybe he will opt out or they will make Mission Impossible 3 so that some other director will take over. Maybe get Twohy . . . oh wait, look what he did to the sequal of Pitch Black. Oh I've got it get Lucas to direct, apparently Paramount wants to destroy the Clancy franchise, Lucas would be the best choice, look at what he's doing to Star Wars (ep. 1 & 2 are my exhibit A and exhibit B).
