to blog or not to blog

Postby kumakami » Thu Oct 01, 2009 3:14 am

I keep wondering if I should try starting up a blog....I just fear my grammar and spell added to thing wouldn't make this a bad idea...I've never been a good judge of my own abilities, critical would be understating things. SO I guess I'm truly asking you who have read my BS on 1km1kmt (not games as I have YET to submit one) you think its a worthy idea?

YES! Blogs are personal, you don't HAVE to have great language skills to write one. You just need something to write about. What would you write about? Would you care if no-one read it? Is it going to be regular? Are you going to have a tight focus (like I do) or be more general?

See if you can answer those. It's always better to start and give it a go rather than not to bother at all.

answers; Gaming, yes as the whole point is other reading...if that didn't matter all blogs would be diaries on computers, I would hope so, both depending on the topic

Your written language isn't so bad that its illegible. I think that if you start up a blog, you should be aware that only 10% of it is about having anything worth reading. The rest is a combination of advertising, compelling writing and the ability to make yourself iconic. So, definitely start writing a blog, but do it with a view to improving your presentation first and foremost. I think that any opinions you voice on your blog can only be strengthened if they're backed up by having contributed to the creation of an RPG in some way. Having said all that, my number one skill is literary critique. If you write something, I can give you constructive and critical feedback.

I recommend writing several blog posts, one a day, without publishing them. If you can keep that up for a week, then create a blog and start blogging. This accomplishes two things: (1) proves you can keep up the pace and (2) gives you a backlog of material to post if you don't have time to write anything for a while.

I did what Sanglorian suggests when I started The Free RPG Blog. I always work at a backlog of one week (CA's Fallout RPG article is being kept in reserve in case my son arrives on a Monday night!) and I have a few projects I'm working on.

I used to try and keep a post in the chute on my blog as well, that failed, and that's why I've gone to the once-a-week format. I can type up most of a post at work, and when I come up with something that doesn't come easily, I drop it as a draft and go from there.

In case you can't tell, I'm in the 'Yes, start a blog!' category.
Please, take a look at my blog,
Endy
