So here it is. I have decided to make a solo rpg based on a concept I have previously described as Highlander/Cyberpunk. The setting is the near future, where readers play an unnamed protagonist who is an "advanced human" born with psionic abilities and who finds themselves frequently driven to travel to various places around the globe. The protagonist may also run into others like them, hoping to learn about their unique mind and body.
So, the basic idea is this: Character Creation- You choose which Psionic Power you get at the beginning, in addition to any abilities that every character would have. Stats are generated. Stats: Charm- Mental "affect others/environment" attribute. Used for getting your way. If there is a "social combat" aspect, this would likely determine damage that you deal. Focus- Mental resistance attribute, used for mental resistance rolls and likely useful for maintaining Psionic effects. Intelligence- Mental task-accomplishing attribute. Used for most things like computers and knowledge.
Agility- Physical task-accomplishing attribute. Used for running, leaping, etc. Stamina- Physical resistance attribute. Probably used for health and reducing damage, working under injury, etc. Strength- Physical "affect others/environment" attribute. Used for damage and stuff.
Order of play: Roll for your starting city location on a location table. From there roll a further location within the city. Roll for Purpose of visit, which may not always be revealed. Roll for initial encounters, such as merchants, other psionics, etc. -When encountering psionics, you roll to see if you have a history with that person, which will color your current encounter. Explore/Infiltrate your objective, randomly generating the "dungeons" with specific tables and populating them with enemies/goodies as you play. Finish encounter, roll a die to see how many days pass before your next Adventure.
For this game I think I will have a specific story unfold as you progress. It won't be as linear as a CYOA book by any means, but a mystery will be present and may have multiple endings.
I love this concept. Please tell me the project hasn't stalled in the couple of weeks since that last post!
One of the ideas I've been bouncing around in my head in the past six months is a similar solo game with a dungeon-crawling theme (passé I know, but it's so hard to find willing company for a good old dungeon bash... 8P ). If I have any creativity resources left after finishing my entry, I just might promote that one here as well.
Speaking of stories, my idea was to include an optional table with plot points that the player could roll on at certain times, such as when finding a loretome or speaking with a sage. The plot points would be disconnected (but hopefully not contradictory, or not too much so), and I'd leave it to the player's imagination to connect the dots. I've found that that method actually produces the best procedurally created stories.
