CPR Project Entry: Truth, Inc.

Well the title is a spin on a PKD novel, and that says a lot about the vision of where I'm going with the game. Its not going to be anything like Karbon, but something centered a little more on intrigue and personal drama. Here is the first draft paragraph from the budding game:

Truth, Inc. is a game about the future of humanity, it is a game about what could be in the world of tomorrow. It takes place in the year 2110, where the entire world is effectively run by a single corporation known as Truth, Inc. This company uses a quantum window to know the past, present, and future – or so they say and no one publicly disputes that. People from all over use the services of Truth, Inc. to determine anything they need to know, for as the name suggests, the company deals in truths. Your regular users simply provide queries at one of any of Truth, Inc. many offices and in return you get a proclamation – for a fee. As far as the public knows, the company has never been wrong. Are they truly a godsend and blessing humanity with their wisdom, or is there something far more sinister at work? This is the core question of the fiction of the game, and something the characters must confront in any one of myriad ways.

You're going to be run out of town for this game concept.

A quantum window that can see the future? How Non-Euclidian.

Karbon came up when we were first discussing the CPRP idea. Chainsaw lives in the 1km1kt archives. In my imagination it's much like Sanford and Son living in their junkyard. A chainsaw aardvark in a house he built in Google SketchUp using CC texture files, filled with confusing public domain photos of people he doesn't know, and outside there's all these PDF thumbnails of 1km1kt submissions, stacked up like old magazines, Dream Merchants over here, Karbon over there, 44 propped haphazardly against a tall stack.

Oh have you seen Dream Merchants? It also has that kind of creepy PKD feel to it. It might be worth checking out.

Truth, Inc. is a game about personal drama unfolding across a broken society that calls itself perfect. Its is a game of action drama and investigation, where alliances will be made, broken, and disregarded over it course. The system itself is engaging, random, and hopefully fun for all playing. Every player needs to revel in the randomness of the rolls, to really seize the opportunities for cool and rich fiction, as its all up to them. Over all, remember three things: Its the goddamn future, these characters are cool motherfuckers, and the question shits on everything: what is Truth, Inc. is really doing? These are called tenets of play, and will be embellished in more detail later.

So the system is forming up now, giving massive love for the d12, and using STR-DEX-CON alone plus a rich set of Traits/Abilities. I'm thinking in the terms of Archer mates with Ghost in the Shell here, and I'm excited.

Hah, a stat for boobs. Nope, can't say that is in the plans - that is all in the fiction baby. Man, though I can totally see where you got that considering the two sources... I'm also looking at adding a heavy helping of Twin Peaks broken eccentric surreality to the mix, but that is on the GM side. I'm getting close to a playtest worthy draft, and I'm hoping to rip through a test of two next week.

Ok, first playtest is tomorrow and here are some PDFs for it for chargen and characters! I'm pumped.

I'm in the final stretch of writing and layout now, and I'm cutting it close (as usual *sigh*). On an interesting note, having taken a break for a while post-playtest has helped ideas gel and I've come back with a clearer vision of the game. *get to working*
