The other thing about having a list of movies to choose from is that the judges can ensure they've seen all the movies on the list. Judging a game by its relevance to the movies can only be done if the judges have seen them. Someone might choose a Kurosawa film I've never seen so I can't judge whether the game justly fits it.

I concur with misterecho. Good thinkin' Rob, this sounds like more fun than even the random titles.

Angels vs. Robots becomes even more interesting when it becomes
Legion + Transformers OR Dogma + Short Circuit.

How about Toy Story vs. Braveheart?
You can take our batteries, but you can never take our FREEEDOMMMMM!

The Disney/Pixar movies seem like they are ripe concept mining.

Onix - Concerning the Silent Movie RPG - I was thinking a little differently. Maybe have the players jockeying for control of the placards that show dialog. I don't want to clutter up this thread though, so I'll make this the end of my comments on that concept. If you create a thread in one of the design forums, I'd be happy to toss ideas back and forth. (Hell, if you don't create it, I might)
Make it work, then make it not suck.

I agree with having a list of the movie titles.

There's a thing with the movies. Contestants shouldn't use copywritted material. For example, if one of the elements of your game is Avatar, it should be inspired in the movie, but without using names as Na'vi, Pandora and so on. Just in case.

Platoon + The Little Mermaid
Crash + Godzilla King of the Monsters
Magnificent Seven + The Seven Samurai (Wait...)
Apocalypse Now + Fantasia
West-side Story + Robocop
The Lion King + Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death
+ Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Duel + THX1138 (The first movies by Spielberg and Lucas together at last!)
American Graffiti +
Jaws + Finding Nemo
They Live + 101 Dalmatians
Barbarella Queen of the Galaxy +
+ Carebears Adventure in Wonderland
Deathrace 2000 + Back to the Future
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the eighth Dimension +
The Shining + DMV safe driving tutorial
Texas Chainsaw Massacre + Miracle on 34th Street
Blues Brothers + Star Wars
Dirty Dancing + Dawn of the Dead

New Rule: No combining movies from with Disney animated Cannon.
New Rule: I'm not allowed to make the list of movies at 3 am.
New Rule: Especially not when reading through Badmovies.org

Despite my attempts to poke fun at the premise, combining movies doesn't sound like a half-bad idea. I share the concerns about copyright (Though if we focus on the funny aspect, then it should be fair-use/parody) and lack of over-lapping film libraries. Then again, I doubt a film distributor has much time to care about us, and media distributions massive as it is, we've probably seen mostly the same productions despite being in different countries.

Of course, I wouldn't mind reusing the random title premise - though we probably should remove any that were used last time to avoid repetition. I also believe someone now needs to write the "Six String Samurai" RPG - sword wielding musicians evading assassins on their way to become king of Las Vegas after the Russians invaded in the 50s...

I was mostly trying to be humorous with odd combinations, but not necessarily espousing that method.

It might be easier to judge if we predetermine the pairings. Thus we could start with a good idea about benchmarks for each concept. However, the contestants would probably enjoy the freedom to combine movies as they please rather than chose from our list. This later possibility also gives gives more choices from a smaller list of movies (ie 15 movies = approximately 120 pairings)
