Unusual sources of Stories and neat spins of the obvious

I've just been raiding through Islamic and Hebrew mythology and theology looking for some inspiration for my new world setting. I think I'm slowly starting to get somewhere.

However I was wondering if anyone had any unusual sources of inspiration or could show me some unsual twists of more comonly accepted ones. with Beastly comming out (Terrible spin on the tale by the looks of it) and someone telling me that the WH40k Horus Heresy was basically the book of Enoch's take on Lucifers Fall (1/3 of the Emperors army siding with his favourite in an act of courrption and insurection).

Has anyone else got anything interesting?

Have you plundered our own mythology? Tolkein (and therefore D&D) did twist it a lot but if you go back to source, there are some interesting things that Tolkein didn't use. For example, Tree Beard is (arguably) the . A forest dweller who is indistinguishable from the trees. There's loads on about good old fashioned Paganism.

Maybe not an unusual source, but I dig it.

I love the stories from around the Caspian region. They always have stuff like, you have to do this or the old lady will eat you.

My grandmother was Armenian and when I was little she often threatened to gobble me up. So I know these stories are highly factual accounts.

And then the old lady would take the young man and fly high up into the air. And I... think... that my grandmother could do that too.
