Introducing RPGs Contest

Postby Onix » Wed Jun 29, 2011 7:39 pm

I was reading through the Startroleplaying.com thread today and it got my wheels turning. I'm running a contest to see who can come up with the best 10 second sales pitch for RPGs (in general). The idea is to have a really impressive/persuasive way of explaining why an RPG is fun. The winner gets a black and white hard copy of The Artifact RPG mailed to them!

Enter by commenting your pitch .

Ten seconds of speech? I'm sorry, but I don't that's enough time. According to Wikipedia, the average fluent English speaking adult can fully comprehend only 300 words per minute. That would make it 50 words in 10 seconds. Even if we pretended that we all spoke as fast as the fastest English Language speaker (637 words per minute), and pretended that the listener could understand (which they probably wouldn't be able to) that would only give us 106 words in which to convince others. I suggest putting a limit of 300 words - one minute of speech.

Unfortunately that's what people are going to give. . . like it or not. You can respond to what the customer is willing to give you or not, that's up to you.

Meh... It was worth a try. I've made my pitch on your website, by the way.

I like the limitations, it's essentially an elevator pitch. In my eventually-finished-guide-to-writing-an-RPG, I use it as a way for a designer to tightly define what they are trying to achieve.

Whoh, Bubbah Brown sent in audio! A solid entry by John also. (I have used something similar to that in the past.)

Rob has the concept, except now try and elevator pitch RPGs in general!

I've been trying to figure that out. Since I don't know how many entries are possible or likely, let's say 'till Gen Con Indy (roughly a month).

Awesome. I think this is a fantastic idea...makes RPG creators really think about a question that doesn't often occur to them. They tend to (I think) approach RPGs from the inside: what would be cool for an RPG? By contrast, asking them why someone who doesn't play should get involved makes them see the problem from a different angle. Love it.
