Re: Survival Games

Personally, I'm looking at it from "average" guy perspective more then
a survival expert's.

I picture scenes being like: a group charter a plane and for whatever reason
it goes down in the tundra of Northern Canada, or they are out skiing and
get caught in a white out/avalanche.

Think of the Book/Movie "Alive".
I am hoping to generate that sort of feel, with similar sort of characters.
Normal people, with regular jobs, who may or may not have some outdoor/survival
experience. I want/would like to build around the guy "forced" to survive, not
the guy whose paid to show us how it's done. :)

That's very cool. I thought that the first 2/3 of "The Descent" (before any supernatural stuff entered) was just amazing. And it was just banter, personal problems, and struggling against the elements. If you haven't seen it I strongly recommend it.

Yeah the first part of "The Descent" was pretty good, and then it devolved into
"Resident Evil in a Cave". Which could be fun, only is Mila is involved :)

As of this posting I have character creation almost done. I've adjusted the
point buy system making it scale up quickly so scores much higher then 5 or 6
cost significantly more, and cause the inclusion of low scores to balance.

I'll be using a d20 roll, with the aim to role under attributes for checks.
Plus a "Degrees of Success" table.

Complication is the Bid system for event resolution. I'm looking at what I have
jotted in my notes and trying to decide if it is really worth the extra complication.

Currently With how I have attribute checks (Score +5 vs a d20 roll - roll even/under to succeed)
I'm finding it hard to justify the "Bid System" when it could be easily handled with possibly several rolls.

The idea was to use the "Bid System" in connection with Storytelling the plan to show more
effort then just rolls.

Looking like It's going to be a bit longer then I thought before I have a draft to share
with everyone . . . . . . but I will share something more tangible soon.

Thanks for all the input :)

Will you be posting the updates on RPG Lab? I've been busy with life in general but I usually drop in for new posts so I'll catch it if you do.

I've been doing sort of a 1/2butted blog at RPGLabs with much of the
same stuff I bring up here, and when I do get a draft done it will be hosted at RPGLab.

:D

Which gives me a thought I may break system out into groups;
separate .pdfs for each section so I can get feed back while I clean up stuff I
still have no clue what I'm doing with

Maybe this weekend I should have a .pdf for Character creation.

Thanks for the idea Onix :)

So I am still working on this.
I have a few blog entires in RPGLab if anyone wants to see what's happening over there.
They pretty much are a little more in depth than what I post here.

I'm hoping with a little push to maybe have character creation finished before the end of the week, and a
draft of that section posted on the RPGLAb site.

Issues:
Personality Traits and Backgrounds . . . am I needlessly complicating the system?
Action Resolution . . . BID system will still be in effect, but should I scrap the idea of
rolling low, in favor of the "Degrees of Success table" where rolling with in 3 above or below
is preferable to rolling really low, or really high.

I've seen a zombie rpg with a focus on survival, but I can't recall how deep the elements ran. There was at least some focus on scavenging, though I think that a lot of the wilderness survival stuff was glossed over.

It's called Outbreak: Undead.

There's also a free quickstart, but I don't know how much stuff it has. Actually, I don't really recall how much either has. Still probably worth a look, I remember thinking it was awesome.

Thanks for the input.
I'll check them out . . .

I've posted a DRAFT copy of what I currently have for
character creation at RPGLabs.

Hopefully this link gets you directly to the pdf.
I Still have a fair bit - to alot of work yet to complete on character creation,
but I feel I should show there has been progress since starting this "project"

Any feedback is welcome. If everything goes well I hope to have character creation complete
by the end of the week.

Thanks for all the input guys. It has really, really, been a big help.
