One potential solution that I used when prototyping before there was POD, I would print the books out, punch three ring binder holes in the pages and then use to hold the pages together. You can get them at the big box home improvement stores. Another thing that helps is to put a plastic cover on the outside of the pages to protect them. I used to use ones I got off blueprint details so I don't know where I'd get them now.

one of the books cost $23 retail.....ink + paper + binder + sleves to hold it in right. most likely more then the $23...or slightly under... not worth it

Well, you could always set up a mobile print shop like the Internet Archive . It is a little hard to post more information, since today is Wikipedia's protest blackout- but that would indicate another reason not to fully trust digital media - things can disappear, go off line, get corrupted, or run out of batteries.

Actually, if you press "stop" fast enough, you can read any wikipedia article.

To be fair, there may be problems with POD stuff.

I know that the first CyberGen book I put out will never be done as POD or even as a PDF. I don't own the rights to the art, I got a discount for first printing rights to the art rather than buying the copyright outright.
I also do which isn't much, but it's enough for me.

You could always release an art-free version. While doing so probably doesn't help the quality, I think it's better to get it out there in any form rather than just let it disappear forever.

while yes there are problems for people trying to reprint others work....god would I love to have the rights to alternity.... I was thinking of companies letting there out-of-print and old additions go to POD. I know a few companies (tsr, AEG, Pinnacle, etc) who have fans that would love to be able to buy their older books again in non-pdf form. (yes pinnacle does this in part).
