A question of system specific adventure writing.

Postby shortymonster » Fri Jul 20, 2012 3:16 am

Hello there. I have finally hit upon something that i would like to produce - for free of course - and I have a few questions that the lovely people on this forum might be able to lend a hand with.

What I want to create is a full written adventure based on a game I GMed a couple of years back. The game was for a not very well known system, although it has been nominated for best setting in this years Ennies, and I was wondering if I might be shooting myself in the foot by making it system specific for Unhallowed Metropolis? It would certainly be an easier write, but would it suffer form not being accessible?

Actually, if there isn't much out there for it right now, you might be shooting yourself in the foot not making for the system? By making an adventure for a at the moment little known system you may be guaranteeing the few users that do play it will be interested.

So is there an option of making it system generic? Can it reasonably be done? If you want to make it generic can you provide both specific rules and generic rules?

I think once I have the bones of the adventure written, it could be a case of inserting the system specific rules without too many problems. Without them, what else would need to be done to make it generic without seeming bland, and leaving too much of it up to the people who want to run the game at some point?

Well, if it's based on Unhallowed Metropolis it's gonna be hard to make it system non-specific without referencing the book because ... that's a pretty specific (and awesome) world.

Also, if you want to write an adventure for Unhallowed, write an adventure for unhallowed. Nothing says that you can't go, "Here it is, what do you people think?" It's when you try to put it on sites like drivethru and the like that causes the problem.

Heck, if you want to make it official pitch it to the company. The author is pretty awesome, and last time I checked was more than willing to have other people play in the sandbox.
I also do which isn't much, but it's enough for me.

Thanks Mr Pond. i actually took a quick trip over to the UnMet forum the other day to check what the deal was on writing and publishing UnMet adventures, and it looks like they're cool with it. As you say though, not really in a position to do much with it apart from hope that the lovely people at atomic overmind like it so much they want to do something with it.

Still along way away from anything like that yet though, I still need to get the bloody thing written.

Anyone else with tips, advice, please let me know!

A more specific question today; does anyone have any great adventures they've played that are based more on investigation and mystery than anything else? And can they wing me a link over so I can check out the format? Cheers!

I have been offered a guest spot on another blog, in fact a site with several bloggers working together. I think I'll use the opportunity to put out the intro/character handout on there once I get it written up how I like it. More details to follow...

That would be telling! But, yes...

Sorry, I would love to keep it a secret, but since I started this blog, they've been a great bunch of guys, and if I can drive anymore traffic to their site i will do.

What I'd like to do would be more to write something from another country. I mean there is references to other countries out there are a lot of interesting things that could be done with a supplement on "The New World" and what happened to the US and Canada during this time frame because ... I think that would be awesome?

As for tips, you might want to check out some of the Gumshoe adventures that are out there. Lots of focus on mystery and investigation.
I also do which isn't much, but it's enough for me.
