Maybe I'm just a grumpy old-timer, but I'm not keen on the pocketmod idea. I like my books to have proper pages, dammit.

For me, making a full-blown game (including setting and advancement, and so on from scratch) is very much the point of 24RPG. I'd struggle to do that in a pocketmod... though maybe it's my expansive style which is to blame.

Regardless I'm likely to be participating again this year - can think of some ideas for any of the suggestions made so far. Personally I like the idea of a "numberless" contest.

Either than or "Non-Human Games" - RPGs that are based on playing anything except traditional human-form characters. Games where you play as buildings, countries, memes, or anything else.

The nonhuman idea is interesting. What about a "Pick X from the list" style, like the mashup from a few years back?

http://www.pocketmod.com/ is a reference for the basic idea - might help you see what people mean.

I like the idea of it... I just don't know how well it'd work in practice.

The more I think about the "non-human games" thing, the more I like it - lots and lots of juicy possibilities. I can think of half a dozen games I'd want to write/play already.

There is a free program from the pocket mod site that lets you convert PDFs into mods - eight page booklets made from one sheet of paper small enough to fit in your back pocket or wallet. Generally, if you want things to be legible at 1/8th size you start with fairly large type and an economy of words per page.

is a really impressive example of what can be done with the format. Notably, its made of two booklets, one for character creation and rules, one for toys, so you can avoid bottlenecks by letting one person build and another person shop. Its also minimal enough that every person can have a copy. After all, a 200 page free game is free - but printing it out and binding it - less so.

In a somewhat lower fidelity presentation, here are books and of my Sputnik Lost Remake. One is rules, the other GM info, and the rest (when finished) are scenarios or mission ideas.
Games of imagination are never truly done. Yet tomorrow we shall start another one.

my new RPG blog.
