I think RPGs are the perfect place to put in mad legends. We can keep it vaguely historical that way too.

[Malta, cool. You'll be in the same time zone as me! And think of all the sun, sea, sand and wine!]

Alright, as long as PenBot is game, it looks like we get to deal with some Templar goodness.

Alright, now we need to see about dividng responsibilites and resources. Matt, would you be okay with being the lead on rules design? Rob, what would you like to do? Penbot?

Yeah, I'm still here and this Templars idea gets my vote. I like the historical and mystical mix. I'll have to start thinking of some ideas and plot for this. I've always felt I'd take the templars side in this matter. But some of the legends are unbelieveable!

It looks like we have 4 basic factions, The Templars, The Church/pope, The French gov. (that may just be two?) and the Infernal. I might like to write for the bad guys or the Infernal in this case.

That's all I can think of at the moment. But I'll be back.

I'd like to lend a hand with the background and flavour. I'll start digging about. Is this a good time to set up a separate forum for our ideas or shall we just post them in here with the [Templar] start tag?

Yeah, 4 basic factions sound right. That assumes that the Papacy has the angelic host on its side (which is an assumption I am confortable with).

Lets just start shgooting out ideas... brainstorm.. and see what fits. Add anything you see as potentially appropriate. None of this brainstorming is set in stone- instead, this is just an opportunity to bounce ideas off one another... no matter how outlandish the idea.

I'll start...

- The Angelic host is not inherantly good. Instead, it is more dedicated to "law." The problem is that "law" can be just as dangerous and evil as "chaos" if it is taken to extremes (as the Papcy and angelic host advocates). If you are familiar with Warhammer Fantasy RolePlay there was a couple of references to demons of Law (angels by any other name)- I always loved that idea.

- Papal ninjas. Possibly a secretive body of monks that do the dirty work of the Pope. (wasn;t there a sect that believed it was above the corrupting influence of sin, and as such would crusade and kill sinners- since they were immediately absolved of the "thou shalt not kill" directive).

- Time? Oct 14th, 1307? A Day after the dastardly King of France, Phillip had the majority of the Templars arrested? Or houw about in 1308... a year after the Papal bull?

- Possibly allied with the Hospitlars. Maybe the Hospitalrs allow the Templars access to safe houses and equipment... all on the sly of course.

- Demons rarely, if ever, manifest. Instead, they must use physical vessels to walk around on earth... such as possessing a human.

- The Templars have access to subtle magics. This magic siphons off angelic essence or demonic essence dending on what the magic does (combat or chance-effects would probably be demonic, healing and law would be angelic).

- Baphomet? This really needs to be something neat. Suggestions? Maybe link it to the discovery and subsequent loss of the Grail?

- Witches and druidic magic should be out there. Both probably have access to demonic magic.

-

- Quick fighting rules with lots of interesting options.

- Social rules for things like "social combat." Hopefully this would help ensure social-based stats and skills will be as useful as ther regular physical combat stuff.

- Conspiracies within conspiracies.

Keep it here with the [Templar] tag. The forum isn't straining under any special posting pressure. 8)

Okay - this not being able to view the other pages is going to get annoying quick. Seems like adding to the thread is the easiest way you can view stuff on pages after the first.

[EDIT: Nevermind - problem now seems to be fixed. Thanks Keeton!]

Anyway - assuming you can read this Chris - I've got a good chunk of basic system design done on something that grew out of our earlier discussions. Shall I post a chunk of it to get the ball rolling here? Would it be better to do a "Templar System/Mechanics Thread" so as not to detract from background/setting discussion?
